DETROIT - Taking one singles match to three sets and another to a first-set tiebreaker, the UIC men's tennis team (2-13/0-4 HL) fell, 4-3, in a tight match with Detroit (8-12/3-3 HL) on Saturday at the Titan Tennis Complex.
The first point of the day went to the Titans in doubles, while the Flames were able to come away with a win at No. 1, as Alexander Raa and Rahul Kamath defeated Mike Basha and Chris Cheung, 8-6. Maurizio Feoli and Alan Reifer faced Alex Latosinsky and David Stabley at No. 2, before going down 8-3, with Nate Kirk and Scott Shepardson dropping an 8-2 decision at No. 3 to Pablo Nunez and Jay Joshi.
Going three-of-six in singles, the Flames won their matches in straight sets. James Li captured his first win at No. 1 this season as he took down Latosinsky, 6-4, 7-5. Reifer came in at No. 3 to top Basha, 6-2, 6-4, and Kamath captured No. 6 against Stabley, 6-3, 6-3.
Raa battled against Cesar Serrano at No. 2 and took his match to three sets before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 4, Feoli went down in a 6-1, 6-2 final to Nunez, as Kirk came in at No. 5 and fell to Cheung, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, after taking his first set to a tiebreaker.
UIC returns to the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts at 2 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15, to host Cleveland State and Youngstown State, respectively, in a pair of Horizon League matches.
