CHICAGO - The top-seeded UIC softball team saw its season come to a close Thursday at Flames Field as No. 3 Valparaiso defeated the Flames 3-1. Junior Jenna Marsalli went the distance with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to try to salvage the Flames' season.

Both teams struggled to get the bats moving in the outing. The Flames and Crusaders notched only three hits each.

In addition to Marsalli's solo homerun, senior Coryn Schmit and junior Jacki Fletcher each had a hit.

Valparaiso collected two runs in the fourth frame and another in the sixth for the three-run total. Despite the solo shot by Marsalli, the Flames couldn't rally enough and concluded the game in a 3-1 decision.

UIC totaled a 23-25 overall record and went 16-5 in Horizon League play. The team will lose six senior members in Teresa Aguilar, Cyndi Becker, Kara Komp, Devin Miller, Melissa Preish and Schmit.
