Swimming and Diving Edged By Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis.- In their first meet back after a four-week break, the UIC men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped to Green Bay on Saturday at the Dorschel Natatorium. The women fell 191-106, as the men were outscored 159-141 by the Phoenix.

"Monica Pinkus, winning 100 and 200 breast and Kei Ishimaru, winning 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200IM, continued their strong seasons for the Flames," stated head coach Paul Moniak.

Despite their best effort, the men's team (3-6, 1-3 HL) was not able to secure the first place score in the meet. Sophomore Rodolfo Zuniga proved to be unstoppable in the 1000 freestyle with a final time of 10:00.08. Kei Ishimaru also had three first-place finishes for the Flames taking the 100 fly (50.87) and 200 fly (1:53.84). Ishimaru also flew through the 200 IM in 1:54.22.

Sophomore diver Mark Ciesielski was best on the one-meter board, achieving a career-best score of 281.32. Ciesielski also placed third on the three-meter board with a final score of 253.65.

Joel Demuth and Nick Kowaleski had the one-two finish in the 100 free with times of 47.07 and 47.77, respectively. Demuth also came in second in the 200 free (1:45.54).

John Mordach touched first in the 200 backstroke (1:57.24), and Mike Reed took the 50 free with a final of 21.41. Sophomore Christian Grobe barely missed first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:11.20.

The 200 medley relay team consisting of Demuth, Peter Errichiello, Grobe and Kowaleski came up short with a time of 1:36.59.

In the last race of the meet, the quartet of Demuth, Errichiello, Conor Ozog and Sebastian Ostrowski missed first by .05 in the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.03).

The women's squad (3-6, 1-3 HL) was also defeated in the meet. Whitney Johnson stunned on the three-meter board with a score of 264.97, achieving top honors. Johnson also took second on the one-meter board with a score of 244.20.

Senior standout Monica Pinkus touched first in the 100 breast (1:06.36) and 200 breast (2:24.60). Sophomore Danel Voorhees was best in the 100 fly with a time of 58.20.

Jocelyn Langballe missed first in the 100 back (2:11.38), Melanie Waszak came in second in the 500 free (5:20.39) and Kelsey Millin touched second in the 200 IM (2:15.53). Anne Jacobsen fell short in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.02.

The foursome of Pinkus, Katherine Hare, Waszak and Voorhees came up short in the 200 free relay with a final time of 1:39.39. The 200 medley relay team (Jacobsen, Pinkus, Voorhees and Hare) also came in second with a final of 1:48.31.

Both squads return back to the Flames Natatorium at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18 to take on Horizon League foe Valparaiso.
