Annual Red vs. Blue Scrimmage Set for Oct. 17

Oct. 13, 2014

Event Information CHICAGO - The fifth annual UIC men's basketball red vs. blue scrimmage has been set for Friday, Oct. 17, starting at 6 p.m. CT, inside the Flames Athletic Center (839 W. Roosevelt Rd.). Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for the free preseason event, which will feature a dunk contest and a three-point shooting competition by the UIC players. Pizza and beverages will be served to all fans in attendance after the scrimmage.

The scrimmage will consist of two 20-minute halves with a running clock and three media timeouts per period.

Head coach Howard Moore welcomes six newcomers to the 2014-15 men's basketball team, including four transfer players. The six newcomers include Jay Harris (6-1, Sr, G / Wagner), Jason McClellan (6-9, Jr, F / Eastern Wyoming College), D'Juan Miller (5-8, Jr, G / Eastern Arizona College), Paris Burns (5-11, Jr, G / Vincennes), Tai Odiase (6-9, Fr, F/C / Homewood Flossmoor) and David Ramon (6-7, Fr, F / Madrid, Spain).

The Flames had a head start to the 2014-15 season as they participated in their first-ever foreign tour this past August. UIC had tremendous success against Canadian University squads, winning three of its five games.

Also new to the Flames' sidelines this year will be assistant coaches Deon Thomas and Jeremy Buttell.

Thomas is highly regarded as on the most successful Americans to ever play overseas as he enjoyed a 14-year career competing in six different countries. Thomas, a native of Chicago, was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 1989 from Simeon High School and went on to become the University of Illinois' all-time leading scorer and shot-blocker.

Buttell was a three-year letterwinner for UIC (2007-10) after transferring from Texas Tech. Buttell was promoted after severing four years on Moore's staff.
