Men's Singles Results Men's Doubles Results ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The UIC men's tennis team traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend to compete in the ITA Regional hosted by The University of Michigan.
In the qualifying draw, junior Isaac Lloveras beat Northern Illinois' Carlos Manzanos in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-2), advancing to the second round where he fell to Western Michigan's Matt Hamilton (6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1). Louis Theodor fell to Illinois' Toshiki Matsuya (6-1,6-4).
"Louis played well in the first set and had a no add point to go up 5-4 but missed the opportunity when his volley carried long," said UIC head coach Hans Neufeld.
Senior Maurizio Feoli fell in the first round of singles competition to Matt Lynch of NIU (4-6, 6-0, 6-2).
Christopher Cole lost to Wisconsin's John Zordani (4-6, 7-5, 6-1). He then went on to defeat Youngstown State's Hugo Morth (6-4, 6-4) in the singles consolation round. In doubles play, Feoli and Carl Hedstrom fell to Ohio State's Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard (8-3).
Doubles pair Lloveras and Theodor defeated Cleveland State's Colton Buffington and Ali Shabib (8-3) to move to the second round of play where they beat Michigan's Kevin Wong and Michael Zhu (2-2) to continue on to the final 16. Lloveras and Theodor then fell to Notre Dame's Drew Dawson and Eric Schnurrenberger (8-1).
"That was the first time we have made the final 16 in the region," said Neufeld. "Lloveras and Theodor played and moved well but did not serve as well in the last match. They broke serve to win the first game but then lost three no ad points on their serve." They proved to themselves that they can compete with the best."
The ITA Regionals acted as the final contest for the Flames' fall season. The squad will return to action Jan. 17, 2015 when UIC plays at DePaul.
