Swimming & Diving Falls Short In Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The UIC swimming & diving teams fell short against Horizon League foe Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The men's squad lost by a final score of 165.5-134.5, while the women were defeated by a final tally of 181-114.

"We lost a tough battle against a perennial Horizon League power," stated head coach Paul Moniak.

The men's team (4-7, 2-4 HL) was unable to stay on top of Cleveland State, taking first in only six of 16 events. Kei Ishimaru came away with three wins on the day, dominating in the 100 butterfly (50.30), 200 fly (1:50.89) and 200 IM (1:55.51). Mike Reed proved to be best in the 50 free with a time of 20.84.

The foursome of Sebastian Ostrowski, Conor Ozog, Ishimaru and Reed came up short in the 200 medley relay with a final time of 1:33.82.

Vince Errichiello and Nick Kowaleski had the one-two finish in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:43.38 and 1:45.15, respectively.

Ostrowski battled through the 100 backstroke, but ultimately came in second with a final time of 51.38. Joel Demuth missed first in the 100 free by .08 seconds, clocking in with a time of 46.54. Christian Grobe touched second in the 200 breast (2:10.00).

Demuth, Ostrowski, Kowaleski and Reed teamed up to dominate the last race of the day, the 400 free relay, with a time of 3:05.77.

The men's diving team took third on both boards with Jeremy Rohrman scoring 244.20 on the one-meter, and Mark Ciesielski finishing with a score of 293.48 on the three-meter.

The women's squad (4-8, 2-5 HL) started the first race of the day with Anne Jacobsen, Monica Pinkus, Danel Voorhees and Melanie Waszak joining forces to take second in the 200 medley relay (1:49.03).

Veronica Gibson dominated the 1000 free in 10:33.38. Gibson also came in second in the 500 free with a final time of 5:10.16.

Gibson (2:12.26) and Gisun Pak (2:18.89) finished in first and second, respectively, in the 200 IM.

Pinkus took the 100 breast and 200 breast with final times of 1:05.64 and 2:22.28, respectively.

Jacobsen missed first by .02 seconds in the 100 backstroke with a final time of 59.57. Waszak touched second in the 200 fly (2:09.83). Voorhees came up short in the 100 fly with a time of 59.10.

The quartet of Pinkus, Waszak, Katherine Hare and Kelsey Millin battled through the 400 free relay, ultimately coming up short with a final time of 3:38.76.

In usual fashion, Whitney Johnson dominated on both boards scoring 274.73 on the one-meter and 279.08 on the three-meter.

With the season winding down, the Flames break until the Horizon League Championships beginning Wednesday, Feb. 26 when they return to Cleveland, Ohio and the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
