YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The UIC men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up competition at the 2014 Horizon League Outdoor Championships Sunday afternoon. The men's squad finished fourth overall with a total of 76 points, and the women's team collected 61 points for a fifth-place finish.

"I was so proud of how the team completed today and I will sorely miss all that the seniors have given to the teams," said head coach Jim Knoedel.

Sophomore Martin Hunter participated in the 200-meter dash crossing the finish line in 21.91 seconds, securing fourth-place. Hunter also competed in the 100-meter dash finishing in just 11.08 seconds.

"Angelos closed out his career with a great race, losing in the last step," said Knoedel. "I thought he had the victory, but he couldn't quite hold off the Oakland runner. He has contributed so much to our programs success over the past four years," said Knoedel.

Angelos Karkalis had an impressive second-place performance in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:54.28.

"Our men's triple jumpers dominated placing, 1st,2nd,3rd," said Knoedel. "Seyi was disappointed with his place in the long jump on Saturday, so he made up him mind that he wasn't going to settle for anything less than a victory."

In the field for the men, Seyi Ogunleye took home top honors in the triple jump with a mark of 14.49 meters. Teammates Richmond Richter and Jordan Banks followed with second and third-place finishes, recording marks of 14.06 meters and 13.83 meters, respectively.

On the women's side, junior Rebecca Zaiter had a notable performance in the 800-meter run, taking third, with a time of 2:17.53. Zaiter also competed in the 1,500-meter run crossing the finish line in 4:33.83.

Junior Tess Ehrhardt ran in the 5,000-meter taking third with a time of 17:45.32. Teammate, Lauren Lindholm quickly followed crossing the finish line in 18:13.78.

Freshman Imani Dixon ran the 400-meter dash in 56.48 seconds, for a third-place finish.

In the field, senior Sharon Mwale took home top honors in the high jump, recording a mark of 1.66 meters.

"Sharon turned in a Cinderella performance to win the high jump," said Knoedel. "No one would have picked her in the top-4, and yet she showed the poise and maturity to pull off a huge upset. I couldn't be more proud of her determination to come out on top."

The Flames continue competition at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., on Friday, May 9.
