INDIANAPOLIS -- The UIC men's tennis team (4-8) picked up its second straight 4-3 victory Friday night as the Flames defeated IUPUI (6-12) at the West Indy Racquet Club. UIC won three singles matches and earned the decisive doubles point.
"We played with good intensity to get the crucial doubles point," said UIC head coach Hans Neufeld. "Our squad had good energy from start to finish."
Mitch Granger made quick work of his singles opponent and won in straight sets at the No. 5 position (6-3, 6-1). He is tied with Louis Theodor for the team lead with six dual play victories.
Isaac Lloveras picked up his second consecutive victory at No. 1 singles as he was victorious in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). He owns four wins at the top spot this season.
Maurizio Feoli also collected his second consecutive singles win. Feoli defeated his opponent at the No. 6 slot by a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) score.
Feoli and Theodor put UIC ahead in doubles competition with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Lloveras and Carl Hedstrom then secured the doubles point for the Flames with a 6-3 victory at the top position. Lloveras and Hedstrom are undefeated (4-0) at the No. 1 doubles spot this season.
UIC opens Horizon League play in Ohio on Sunday as the Flames play at Wright State (7-11, 0-2 HL). Competition against the Raiders is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CT at the Dayton Center Courts.
