CHICAGO - The UIC men's tennis team will travel to Ohio this weekend to take on Horizon League rivals Youngstown State (7-11, 3-1 HL) and Cleveland State (14-7, 2-2 HL). The Flames will take on the Penguins Saturday at 4 pm and Vikings Sunday at 2 pm.
The Flames last saw YSU on April 19, 2014, when UIC defeated the Penguins by a 4-3 score. Maurizio Feoli competed at the No. 4 singles position and defeated his opponent in straight sets. Christopher Cole collected a hard fought victory at the No. 5 spot (6-1, 5-7, 6-4).
In doubles competition, UIC won two matches as Carl Hedstrom, Isaac Lloveras and Feoli teamed up with their respective partners to dominate the Penguins. Feoli and Hedstrom were victorious at the top spot by an 8-6 score.
UIC competed against Cleveland State the day prior (April 18, 2014) when the Flames fell by a 6-1 final. Lloveras won in straight sets at the No. 3 singles position.
Mitch Granger and Hedstrom are currently tied for the team lead with eight singles victories. Hedstrom and Feoli have won two straight singles matches.
Cole and Granger have teamed up for three doubles wins at the No. 3 spot, including two consecutive victories last weekend. Hedstrom and Lloveras own a team-high four wins at the No. 1 position.
These are the final matches for the Flames before the Horizon League Championships. The three-day event will take place April 24-26 in West Lafayette, Ind. inside Schwartz Tennis Center.
