INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC women's soccer team (1-1) struck first with a goal in the second minute but it was then held off as IUPUI (1-0-1) went on to score four goals and take the 4-1 win on Sunday at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
"Despite scoring early, IUPUI did a great job controlling the game," head coach Brian Rigby said. "We could not match their intensity and when you make mental mistakes versus any team you play, you will get punished and that's what happened to us today. We will take the next training session to improve in our strengths and begin to prepare for Saint Louis next week."
Emily Wauer scored her first goal of the season as Haley Kittle picked up the assist. Wauer led the Flames with three shots on the day with nine other players contributing to UIC's 12 shot attempts, with seven reaching on goal. Goalkeeper Kelly Fritz played the full 90 minutes and made two saves, both in the first half.
The Flames got on the board just two minutes into the game as Wauer scored off a cross from Kittle. The Jaguars responded in the seventh minute when Krissy Kirkhoff scored her first of the game, assisted by Sierra Bryant and Tori Minnich.
UIC tallied four more shots in the half by Kittle, Rebeca Pallo, Wauer and Emi Yamamoto. Pallo had her attempt saved in the 27th minute and Yamamoto was stopped in the final 30 seconds of the half.
IUPUI came out in the second half and scored twice within the first four minutes. Minnich broke the tie in the 46th minute, assisted by Kirkhoff, and then Kirkhoff got her second goal in the 49th minute.
The Flames made several quality chances over the following 10 minutes, but Olivia Everin, Bekah Allen and Wauer all had their shots stopped by the IUPUI keeper. Alexis Jakuszewski had her attempt blocked and Jasmin Carrera went wide right before Flo Beshiri was stopped in the 70th minute. Naomi Rushe went high on UIC's final shot.
The Jaguars scored their final goal of the game in the 75th minute as Beth Parks swiped the ball and shot it to the far post.
The Flames continue their road swing with a match on Friday in St. Louis, Mo., against the Billikens. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Hermann Stadium.
