CHICAGO - The UIC women's soccer team (1-3-0) came up short in its home opener at Flames Field on Sunday afternoon as it was blanked to Western Michigan (2-1-0), 3-0.
The Flames were held to a mere six shots on the day, with Emily Wauer and Flo Beshiri owning the best attempts for UIC, both resulting in saves. Naomi Rushe (2), Emi Yamamoto and Rebeca Pallo also added to UIC's total. The Broncos tallied 23 shot attempts and had 11 on goal.
Western Michigan struck first with a goal in the eighth minute by Candice Uhl, assisted by Irene Young. The Broncos had 13 shots in the first half and forced six on goal. UIC was limited to two chances, with Wauer coming up with the lone shot on target in the final minute of play.
Two minutes into the second half, the Broncos collected their second goal on a shot sent in by Young off a rebound from Alyssa Smith. The Flames battled for possession and were able to take three shots by Yamamoto, Pallo and Beshiri, whose attempt was saved, before Western Michigan scored again in the 75th minute on an unassisted goal by Maria Jaramillo.
Goalkeeper Kelly Fritz played her third complete game of the season and made eight stops, with five coming in the first half.
The Flames remain at home for their next matchup on Friday against SIUE. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Flames Field.
