CHICAGO - The UIC Volleyball team (4-2) won its third straight match defeating Chicago State (0-6) in four sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon in the Flames Athletic Center. UIC went 3-0 over the weekend to capture the UIC Invitational title marking the first time since Sept. 7-8, 2007 the Flames went undefeated in their tournament. The 4-2 start is the best by the Flames since the team started 5-1 in 2011.
Alyssa Ehrhardt, the tournament MVP, paced UIC with 16 kills on 31 attempts, matching her season best. Through the first and second sets Ehrhardt produced 10 kills on 14 tries as the Flames never trailed in the contest. UIC would drop the third set, 25-23, their first loss of the entire tournament before rebounding to win in the fourth set.
UIC had three players with 12-plus kills on the afternoon - Stephenee Yancy (12), Kyisha Hunt (13) and Ehrhardt. Nicole Johnson handed out 52 assists, her fifth straight contest with 40 or more helpers, while Bridget Powell collected 14 digs.
The Flames return to action on Sept. 11-12 in the Butler All-American Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. UIC will play tournament host Butler at 10 a.m.
