After three tight quarters, Saturday's game between UIC and IUPUI was begging for someone to take control and lead her team to victory.
Unfortunately for the Flames, that player was IUPUI's Mikale Rogers. She scored 13 of her game-high 23 points and added four rebounds in the final stanza, as the Jaguars held off the Flames, 67-57.
UIC had a 43-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Tyra Carlsten-Handberg, who had a team-high 13 points off the bench, made her third three-pointer to tie the game at 48 with 6:40 remaining. But then Rogers started to take over. She scored seven straight Jaguar points as UIC went 3:48 without a field goal and faced an 8 point deficit with just over two minutes to go. The Flames quickly closed the gap to four, but IUPUI made sure the ball got into the hands of Caitlyn Tolen, who made all six of her free throws in the final minute when UIC was forced to foul.
The Flames missed their first four shots of the game but made seven of their next 11, ending the first quarter on a 6-0 run. The bench provided a spark as
Taylor Toney and Carlsten-Handberg combined to score nine straight points and extend UIC's lead to 24-17 in the second quarter. Later in the period, Toney stole an inbounds pass and drove for a layup to build the lead to 8 points. The Jaguars responded with an 11-0 run to end the half and took a three point lead at the break.
Shots continued to not fall for UIC in once the second half got underway. They missed 10 straight shots overall until
Teodora Zagorac (10 points, team-high 7 rebounds) made a layup with 6:45 to go in the third. That got the Flames back on track and soon thereafter
Melita Emanuel-Carr converted a four point play to give UIC a two point lead.
Terri Bender made a short jumper as the third quarter ended to give UIC their final lead of the game. Rogers picked up her fourth foul within the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter, but never came off the floor. She was 6-for-8 in the quarter, as IUPUI shot 70% (7-10) in the fourth after being held in check through the first three at 36.8% -- well below their season average of 47.7%.
UIC squeezed off eight more shots than IUPUI, but the Jaguars made their bones at the free throw line, where they made 21 of 24 attempts. UIC made just 13 trips to the line, converting nine.
After playing four games in nine days, UIC will have a lengthy 11 day break before returning to action. They'll face Toledo in their first road game of the season on Dec. 1.
