CHICAGO – It was a game of runs as the Flames played tough for 20 minutes before Green Bay turned up the intensity and cruised to a 58-40 win Thursday night at the UIC Pavilion. UIC has dropped two straight and four of its last five games.
On Breast Cancer Awareness Night the crowd of cheering fans watched as the Flames gave the Horizon League-leading Phoenix and tough battle for a half of basketball. Green Bay stormed out of the gate from the tip with an 11-3 lead and extended that to as many as 12 points.
UIC found its rhythm behind Melita Emanuel-Carr (10 points) on a three-point play to tie the game at 20-20. The Flames used a 9-2 run in the quarter which led to their only lead of the game at 22-20 on a jumper by Teodora Zagorac (six points) with 3:48 left remaining. Green Bay would counter the Flames threat with a 7-2 run to close out the period and take a 27-24 lead into the half. The Flames shot 50 (5-10) percent in the quarter and 42.9 (9-21) percent in the first half.
The second half belonged to Green Bay as they shot 63.6 (7-11) percent in the third quarter while limiting UIC to just six points on 2-15 (13.3%) shooting. At one point the Flames were 0-13 from the floor in the third quarter before Brittany Byrd (eight points) connected on a driving layup.
"We played a good first half and then the third quarter hurt us," said head coach Regina Miller. ‘We came out of the locker room and took a lot of outside shots."
The Flames were outscored 31-16 in the second half and shot 23.1 (6-26) percent. Ruvanna Campbell was limited to five points and seven rebounds in the contest. It was just the third game this season she has been held below double figures in both categories.
"Green Bay has a tendency to switch on everything and at times they were double and triple-teaming Ruvanna," said Miller. "Some of the shots we took early in the third quarter, we didn't need them. We settled for the first shot, instead of working to get the best shot."
UIC can right the ship on Saturday afternoon when Milwaukee visits the Pavilion in the inaugural "Stop the Violence" game at 3 p.m. CT.
