CARBONDALE, Ill. - The UIC men's tennis team (3-4) traveled to Southern Illinois to take on the Salukis (4-1) Saturday morning. The Flames fell, 5-2, inside the Garden Grove Event Center.
Carl Hedstrom and Marcel Dib teamed up at the No. 2 spot to collect UIC's lone doubles victory of the night, 7-5. Hedstrom and Dib have collected seven wins in ten attempts at No. 2 this season.
Teammates Christopher Cole and Mitch Granger lost a hard-fought match at No. 1, eventually falling by a score of 7-6 against Jonny Rigby and Piotr Baranski.
In singles, Granger gave forth his best effort at the No. 4 seat, downing opponent Peter Molloy, 6-3, 6-2. Dib took his match at the No. 5 spot to three sets, eventually defeating Alex Pozo, 5-7, 6-4, 10-7.
"We came out in the doubles with good energy, but lost a 19-17 heartbreaker to lose the point," said head coach Hans Neufeld. "We had a great effort from Mitch and Marcelo closing out the day."
The Flames return to action Sunday evening when they make a brief trip to Evanston, Ill. to face the Northwestern Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. (CT).
