INDIANAPOLIS - The UIC softball team (13-10) came up short in its efforts to come back from a deficit as it was defeated by IUPUI (10-16) on Monday at the IUPUI Softball Complex. Freshman Lexi Watts produced her 11th multi-hit game of the season as she put up her second three-hit outing.
Watts led the Flames' offensive production with half of their hits on the day as they were limited to six tallies, with additional contributions from seniors LaRi Mitchell, Laura Swan and Dana Capocci.
UIC appeared to be off to a good start in the first inning, as Mitchell and Watts led off with back-to-back singles. But the pair were held on base and the Flames went stagnant in the following two frames.
IUPUI jumped ahead 2-0 in the second as a RBI double and RBI single scored the base runners. Another run was scored in the third when the batter singled and advanced to third on a UIC error before scoring on the throw on an attempted stolen base.
In the fourth, the Flames were able to come together and put their lone run of the game on the board. Swan led off with a single to left center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. James and Capocci then drew back-to-back walks before Soppet also earned a free base to walk in Swan.
The Jaguars answered back in the bottom half as the leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout.
The final runs of the game were produced in the fifth when a two-out, two-run home run out to center put IUPUI up 6-1.
UIC left three runners on base in their final two offensive innings as Capocci and Watts singled in the innings and Soppet reached on a hit by pitch.
Redshirt-freshman Karissa Frazier made her seventh start of the year and tossed four innings with a season-high six strikeouts, two walks and three hits. Redshirt-junior Alice Fitzpatrick pitched the final three innings and struck out one, walked one, gave up two hits and did not earn credit for a single run.
The Flames will turn around and take on SIUE on Tuesday in their final game before the start of the conference season. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT at Cougar Field in Edwardsville, Ill.
