UIC Caps Season Following Pair of Tournament Losses

May 13, 2016

CHICAGO -- The UIC softball team could not come up with the offensive production it needed as it was eliminated from the Horizon League Championship on Friday after suffering a pair of losses to No. 6 Valparaiso (17-32) and No. 2 Wright State (37-22). The Flames were first shut out by the Crusaders, 1-0, and then dropped a 3-1 decision to the Raiders.

UIC's 2016 season comes to a close with a 33-18 record following an 18-5 mark in the Horizon League, which secured the program's second-consecutive and 15th regular season title. The Flames graduate their senior class of Bridget Boyle, Dana Capocci, LaRi Mitchell and Laura Swan.

"I am proud of our kids for a great season," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "Although we fell short today, we fought hard like we always do and gave ourselves opportunities to win both games. Our seniors were tremendous leaders this year and they will be missed. The program took a step in the right direction this year and will continue to be a contender in upcoming years."

The Flames were limited to just eight hits combined through the two games, with two hits apiece from Capocci and freshman Lexi Watts. Sophomore Taylor Cairns, juniors Savannah Soppet and Kaleigh Nagle and Mitchell also added to the total. UIC scored just one run, brought in by Capocci.

No. 6 Valparaiso 1, No. 1 UIC 0

Behind a gem of a game thrown by Horizon League Pitcher of the Year Elaine Heflin, UIC could not convert as it was limited to just three hits and picked up five walks. Mitchell, Watts, Mack-Miller, Soppet, Capocci and freshman Emily Wetzel all reached base, but were left stranded as the Flames left nine runners.

Heflin posted her 20th complete game of the season as she struck out nine, with at least one strikeout in each of the first five innings, walked four and held the Crusaders to just one hit. In the midst of the game, Heflin retired eight-straight batters.

After leaving a pair through the first two frames, Valparaiso scored the lone run of the game in the third as it put a runner on off a UIC error and then scored on a two-out RBI double by Sam Stewart.

The Flames left one runner on in three of the first four innings before they placed two on with a pair of walks for Wetzel and Mitchell in the fifth but, again, left them stranded.

In the sixth, UIC had its best opportunity as it loaded the bases on Mack-Miller's second walk of the game to lead off the frame and back-to-back singles came from Soppet and Capocci, but all were held.

No. 2 Wright State 3, No. 1 UIC 1

Wright State jumped ahead 3-0 and UIC was unable to come back as it was kept to five hits and one walk. Mitchell, Watts, Nagle, Capocci and Cairns added tallies for the Flames, with Swan also reaching base on a walk.

Redshirt-freshman Karissa Frazier earned the start and went five innings with three strikeouts, four walks and six hits allowed. Boyle entered to start the sixth and finished the game with one strikeout and three hits.

Wright State took the early 1-0 lead after the first as a leadoff single put one on and a two-out double by Macey Gunther. The Raiders would then leave the bases loaded to end the third, as well as in the second.

Two more runs were scored for Wright State in the fifth to go up 3-0. A walk and a single set up Libby Pfeffer to hit a RBI single, with the second run scoring as UIC committed a fielding error.

After Mitchell singled in the first and Watts doubled in the fourth, the Flames put a pair of runners on in the fifth as Capocci hit a one-out single and Wetzel reached on a Wright State error. Freshman Jasmine Willis entered to pinch hit but grounded into a double play to end the inning.

UIC put up a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Nagle led off with her fifth double of the year and then came around to score following a pair of groundouts, with Capocci earning the RBI. With two outs, Wetzel reached on a WSU error and moved up to second on a single to right by Cairns, but both runners were left to end the game.
