UIC Pulls Away with 2-1 Win at YSU

Flames win third straight conference match

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – UIC (5-11-0, 3-3-0 HL) secured its third consecutive Horizon League win Saturday afternoon as it posted a 2-1 victory over Youngstown State (4-10-1, 0-6-0 HL) at Farmers National Bank Field. Tamae Douglas and Emily Valentine scored for the Flames, with Valentine netting the eventual game-winner.

Match Highlights
  • Khayam Comes Up Big: Youngstown State threatened to be the first to score as it was awarded with a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Taken by Sammy Salatino, Tara Khayam got a hand on the ball and knocked it away before she came back to make another save immediately after.
  • Douglas Extends Hot Streak: Douglas gave the Flames the 1-0 lead in the 28th minute after she put the ball in the back of the net for the third consecutive game. Already with three shots to her name, the reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week headed the ball in after Janai Cedeno sent in the cross that connected with Everin and went to Douglas.
  • Penguins Answer Late in First Half: While the first half proved to be in favor of UIC, the Penguins forced a 1-1 tie heading into halftime after scoring in the 44th minute. A foul just outside the 18-yard box set Sophie McFarland on the free kick and she made a short pass to Marissa Martin who had the ball hit off the crossbar and into the goal.
  • Penalty Kick Striker: With limited opportunities in the second half, a hand ball in the box in the 68th minute awarded the Flames with a penalty kick. Valentine took the attempt and converted for her third PK tally of the season.
Facts and Figures
  • The Flames extended their scoring streak to a program-record seven matches as it was Douglas who continued the streak after scoring in each of the last three games.

  • Douglas' goal was her fourth of the year and second against League foes.
  • Valentine improved to a perfect 3-for-3 in penalty kick attempts while also holding a program record for PK goals. All three of the efforts have come over the last five games.
  • UIC outshot Youngstown State, 12-11, with a team-high four from Douglas as it was the first time the Flames had a higher tally than their opponent since facing SIUE (Sept. 3).
