Flames Comeback Efforts Fall Short at Cleveland State

UIC takes 3-2 loss versus Vikings

CLEVELAND – The UIC women's volleyball team (13-9, 4-5 HL) endured a 3-2 (18-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 10-15) setback on Friday night against Horizon League foe Cleveland State (13-7, 6-3 HL). The Flames fought back from a 2-0 hole to force the tiebreaker, but their efforts came up short as the match ended in favor of the home squad after a 15-10 decision in the fifth.

How It Happened
  • Set One: The Flames went on a four-point streak early, going up 5-3, with kills from Brecken Roe and Kyisha Hunt aiding the advance.
  • Set One: The Vikings replied with five unanswered points to take an 8-5 lead, forcing the Flames to use their first timeout. Hunt put the streak to a stop with a termination, but CSU took five of the next six for a 13-7 lead. The Vikings went on to take the set 25-18.
  • Set One: Both Hunt and Sarah Daneliak killed three in the first, while Hicks and Roe each added a pair.
  • Set Two: The Flames were in a 11-6 hole to start, but were able to come within two off of kills from Roe and Hunt, as well as a Viking error, 11-9.
  • Set Two: Following a Cleveland State timeout, a UIC error made it 12-9. The Flames rattled off three more unanswered points to tie it, with Roe and Hicks once again adding a pair to go alongside a UIC service ace.
  • Set Two: Tied at 16, Cleveland State took three unanswered points, forcing the Flames to regroup. The Flames came back with a pair of points to come within one, 19-18, but a pair of errors and a CSU termination gave the Vikings space, 22-19. UIC was unable to gain traction, as Cleveland State went on to take set two 25-20.
  • Set Three: Following the intermission, the Flames went up 13-10 at the start of the third. Following a Viking timeout, Cleveland State rallied for three points to tie it at 13, causing UIC to use a timeout of its own.
  • Set Three: The Flames were able to go up 17-15, but a pair of errors and a successful CSU offensive attack gave the home team the lead, 18-17.
  • Set Three: The Vikings led by one, 21-20, until the Flames took three in-a-row by way of a pair of kills from Hunt and an ace from Alexandra Drosopoulou, 23-21. Another pair of kills from Hunt closed out the third set in favor of UIC, 25-23, to cut Cleveland State's lead in half.
  • Set Four: Hunt continued her success into the fourth set, taking credit for five of the Flames first 10 points leading to a 10-5 UIC lead at the start. The Vikings threatened with four unanswered points, 10-9, but UIC retaliated with three, 13-9.
  • Set Four: The Flames extended their lead to six, 19-13, before Cleveland State was called back to the bench. The Vikings came back and took three, 19-16. Following a UIC timeout, the Flames grabbed two more off terminations from Daneliak and Alexandria Hicks, 21-16. CSU would only put two more on the board before UIC put a wrap on set four with a 25-18 victory to tie the match.
  • Set Five: Leading by only one, 7-6, Cleveland State took five straight, 12-6. The Vikings never looked back, eventually taking the tiebreaker 15-10.
