YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC women's volleyball team (14-9, 5-5 HL) snapped a three-match losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 28-26, 25-19) over Youngstown State (7-17, 0-10 HL). The victory was the Flames' fifth conference win of the season, surpassing last season's Horizon League win total (4).
How It Happened
- Set One: The first frame started with a 5- 5 tie, until a pair of kills from Alexandria Hicks, a YSU service error and an ace at the hands of Brecken Roe gave the Flames room, 8-5.
- Set One: Leading 13-10, the Flames were given two off of Penguin errors, while Sarah Daneliak and Roe put up a pair of blocks that gave UIC a comfortable 18-10 lead.
- Set One: The Flames led by as many as nine, 22-13, when Youngstown State was called back to the bench. Following the brief pause, UIC scored three straight by way of a kill from Alexandra Drosopoulou and another pair of YSU errors to take the set, 25-13.
- Set Two: The Penguins quickly turned the tables, pulling out to a 13-9 lead at the start of the second. Youngstown State never trailed after that, taking the second, 25-21.
- Set Three: UIC started the third frame with a 12-10 lead, and took four of the next five thanks to terminations from Kyisha Hunt and Roe, as well as an ace from Drosopoulou, 16-11.
- Set Three: The Flames led 19-14, when the Penguins drew within one, 19-18, off of a kill and an ace, as well as two UIC errors.
- Set Three: The Penguins took over the lead with three straight, 22-21, and the two teams were neck-and-neck until the Flames were able to close it out with a kill from Hunt, 28-26.
- Set Four: UIC started out the fourth set with a 3-0 lead, and extended the lead to 18-11 with successful attacks from Hunt, Hicks, Daneliak and Roe.
- Set Four: The Flames led by nine, 22-13, when the Penguins strung together five unanswered points to threaten, 22-18. A kill from Daneliak put a stop to the skid, and the YSU offense would only register one more before Daneliak and Drosopoulou gave UIC the 25-19 win.
Facts and Figures
- Ali Witt matched her career-high total blocks, contributing in seven of the Flames 11 blocks as a team.
- The Flames 11 team blocks was their second-highest total of the season.
- Hunt also matched her career-high block total, blocking six against the Penguins. The senior also lead the match in kills with 17.
- Setter Nicole Johnson recorded her fourth double-double of the season, collecting 10 digs alongside her 18 assists.
- Hicks notched 13 kills for the offense, her second-highest total of the season.
- Carla Salvato dug out a match-high 18 on the defensive side.
- Drosopoulou contributed 11 digs for the Flames, while also adding five kills for the offense.
