ROCHESTER, Mich. –The UIC women's volleyball team (17-11, 8-7 HL) endured a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 19-25) loss to Horizon League runner-up Oakland (17-11, 12-4 HL) in a Friday afternoon matinee in the Athletics Center O'rena. The Flames came out strong with a win in the first set, but were unable to hold off the Golden Grizzlies in the next three.
Match Highlights
- Set One: Tied at 11, the Flames took four straight for a 15-11 lead, three of which were to the credit of Alexandra Drosopoulou, registering two service aces and a kill.
- Set One: Oakland came back and took five of the next six to tie it at 16. Shortly after, tied at 18, UIC tabbed five unanswered points thanks to a trio of Oakland errors as well as kills from Manuela Conte and Drosopoulou, 22-18.
- Set One: The Golden Grizzlies' offense registered just three more points, as the Flames sealed the deal with a kill from Kyisha Hunt to take a 25-21 set one victory.
- Set Two: The Flames carried the success into the early stages of set two, pulling out to an 11-8 lead. The Oakland offense came alive, scoring the next six points for the Golden Grizzlies for a 14-13 lead.
- Set Two: Staring down an 18-16 deficit, Drosopoulou rattled off another two service aces, while Sarah Daneliak put one down to put the Flames back on top 19-18. Untimely errors gave way to a seven-point streak for the home team, who took the set 25-19.
- Set Three: The third frame saw a 10-3 lead early on for the home team, and its lead held strong as they never trailed in the set, taking it by a final score of 25-18 to go up 2-1.
- Set Four: Oakland continued to dominate into set four, building a 14-8 cushion at the start. Facing a 20-12 deficit, Drosopoulou terminated three and an Oakland error gave UIC its closest attempt, 20-16.
- Set Four: The Flames were unable to turn the tables, as the Golden Grizzlies came away with a 25-19 win in and a 3-1 match victory.
Facts and Figures
- Alexandra Drosopoulou had one of her best showings in a Flames jersey, killing a career-high and match-high 19 for the UIC offense. The freshman also added six service aces and nine digs.
- Kyisha Hunt was the only other Flame to record double-digit kills, terminating 10 for UIC.
- Ali Witt, Sarah Daneliak and Brecken Roe each registered six kills for the offense.
- Manuela Conte led the Flames defense, digging out 12 while also adding a block assist.
- Andrea Aviles contributed nine digs, while Carla Salvato collected six digs in the libero position.
- Nicole Johnson had a match-high 44 assists, putting her just 18 assists away from the all-time careers assists record. Â
