CHICAGO – The UIC women's volleyball team (17-9, 8-5 HL) bested Wright State (9-17, 3-10 HL) by a final score of 3-1 (25-16, 11-25, 25-18, 25-19) on Friday evening at home in the Flames Athletic Center. UIC fought back from early deficits in both sets three and four to finish to grab its fourth-straight Horizon League win.
Match Highlights
- Set One: The Flames built a lead of 15-13 to start the match, and a five-point streak gave UIC some comfort, 20-13.
- Set One: Two kills and a UIC error gave Wright State their final three points of the frame, as the Flames settled in and ended the set with four straight, 25-16.
- Set Two: The Raiders led off the second with a 4-0 lead, and dominated through the end of the period, taking the set 25-11.
- Set Two: Wright State was a force up at the net, collecting six of their 11 total blocks in the second. The Raiders also recovered with a .375 hitting percentage in set two, while the Flames fell to -.081.
- Set Three: The third frame started off looking similar to the second, as the Raiders pulled out to an 8-4 lead early. The Flames fought back with a five-point run to take the lead, 13-11. The streak saw a pair of kills from Kyisha Hunt, a termination from Manuela Conte and a service ace from Alexandra Drosopoulou.
- Set Three: UIC led by as many as seven, 21-14, but Wright State took three in-a-row to put a dent in the lead, 21-17. Raider errors gave the Flames not only four of the next five, but also the set victory, 25-18.
- Set Three: Hunt registered eight kills in set three, the most by any player in a single set throughout the match.
- Set Four: Set four started the same as set three, with the Raiders once again taking an 8-4 advantage. This time it took UIC until the 15-15 mark to tie it, and the Flames went on to take over the lead off an 8-0 run, 18-15.
- Set Four: Leading by a pair, UIC grabbed three straight thanks to a kill from Alexandria Hicks, a service ace from Nicole Johnson and a Wright State error to make it 22-17. UIC errors gave the Raiders their final two points before another kill from Hicks and a pair of blocks gave the Flames the 25-19 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
Facts and Figures
- Kyisha Hunt led the offense through the match with 14 kills and a .263 hitting percentage while also adding two block assists.
- Manuela Conte tabbed her eighth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 16 digs for the Flames.
- Alexandria Hicks killed ten on the offensive front, while also blocking three up at the net.
- Ali Witt ended the night with a .381 hitting percentage, with nine kills and only one error.
- Sarah Daneliak blocked five for UIC, as the Flames collected eight blocks as a team.
- Carla Salvato added 13 digs, as did Alexandra Drosopoulou. Andrea Aviles dug out 10.
- Nicole Johnson contributed 40 assists was also one-dig shy of a double-double with nine.
