Champaign, Ill. – The Flames are starting to kick into gear as the end of the outdoor track season draws closer. Despite windy and cold conditions, the men's team grabbed second place in a 10 team field this weekend at the Illinois Twilight on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Brixton Rill captured second place in the 3000 meter steeplechase and improved his personal best by three seconds. Rill also finished seventh in the 5000 meter run. The men's 4 x 100 meter team took second place, crossing the finish line in 41.54 seconds. In the hurdle races,
Maciej Markiewicz and Jakob Mogorvic both ran in the 400 meter hurdles, placing third and fourth overall.
In the field events
Shaun Wollenweber continued his dominance in triple jump, placing first overall with a mark of 15.03 meters. He also finished sixth in long jump with a leap of 6.71 meters.
On the women's side, Carli Benson posted a breakout performance with career bests in the triple jump and javelin. Benson placed fourth in the triple Jump (11.21 meters) and seventh in the javelin with a throw of 32.79 meters. Other notable performances included Mia Cruz-Bastian (7th in the 400 meter), Lizzie Deutsch (7th in the 5000 meter) and Janeka Stokes (8th in high jump).
UIC has one meet remaining on April 29 at the Crusader Open in Valparaiso, Ind. before heading to the Horizon League Outdoor Championships in Youngstown, Ohio.
