CHICAGO – The UIC women's soccer team (0-2-0) is on the hunt for its first win of the season as it heads down to Kansas City, Mo., for a Friday night tilt with UMKC (0-2-0). The first ever meeting between the Flames and the Roos kicks off at 7 p.m. CT at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
Â
UIC returns to action following opening weekend, where they had a 0-2-0 turnout. After dropping a 2-0 decision at Indiana State (Aug. 18), the Flames returned home where
Tamae Douglas scored UIC's first goal of the season, assisted by
Keri Birkenhead, against Eastern Michigan (Aug. 20) but ultimately came up short as the Eagles pulled away with the 2-1 final.
Â
In comparison to last season, the Flames currently sit in a better position, offensively, after two games. A total of 31 shots have been taken, four more than 2016, to rank third in the Horizon League as 12 have been on goal. The tallies have been made up by 11 different players with Birkenhead (8),
Olivia Everin (7) and Douglas (6) leading the group and placing in the top 10 in the league standings.
Â
Kelly Fritz has possessed all 180 minutes in goal. With opponents firing off 28 shots, she has been forced to make seven saves, all coming against EMU.
Â
UMKC is without a win this season, as well, after falling to Oral Roberts, 2-1, and Oklahoma State, 4-1. Kelsey Mothershead and Abby Small make up the two goals while Reighan Childers owns an assist. The Roos have taken 24 shots and had 16 reach on goal, as Mothershead (6) and Lexie Howard (5) lead the team with their efforts. Anna Lillig has played every minute in goal and has made 14 saves as the opposition has taken 40 shots.
