Flames Hold off Vikings for 3-2 Victory

UIC wins fourth-consecutive match

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (13-8, 6-2 HL) won its fourth-straight match on Saturday afternoon, taking down top-contending Cleveland State (12-8, 6-2 HL) by a final tally of 3-2 (25-16, 25-21, 24-26, 21-25, 15-7). The Flames quickly went up 2-0, but the Vikings proved tough, taking the next two sets to force the tiebreaker, which the Flames took definitively, 15-7.

Match Highlights
  • Set One: The Flames led by a pair when two blocks and a kill gave UIC three straight, 17-12.
  • Set One: Leading by four, 20-16, the Flames took their last five in-a-row to silence the Vikings, 25-16. Ali Witt put up a pair of kills as well as a block assist with Clara Lamb in the streak, while a Marija Borcic ace capped the set.
  • Set Two: An early 5-0 run gave Cleveland State a 6-2 lead, but the Flames went on an 8-2 to take over the lead, 10-8.
  • Set Two: The Vikings caught up at the 11-point mark, and the two teams kept it tied until the Flames strung together four-straight points for a 21-18 lead.
  • Set Two: CSU got in a kill, but Kiera James replied with a pair of kills herself, 23-19. James would end up putting the ball to the ground for the Flames final two points as well, as UIC took the set 25-21.
  • Set Three: UIC took an early 7-3 lead, but the Vikings quickly struck back, taking over the lead at the 9-8 mark.
  • Set Three: Cleveland State's lead grew to five, 20-15, but the Flames fought, going on a 5-1 run to come within one, 21-20. James stayed hot, contributing three kills in the run.
  • Set Three: The Flames tied the match at 24 after a block from Tatyana Ndekwe and Paola Santiago, but a block and a kill from the Vikings ended it, 26-24.
  • Set Four: Set four started with another early lead for the Flames, 10-7, but the Vikings once again overcame it, taking five straight to lead 12-10.
  • Set Four: Cleveland State never gave up the lead from that point, taking the set 25-21.
  • Set Five: Tied at two, UIC took four of the next five for a 6-3 advantage. Following a pair of kills from Santiago, the Flames lead extended to four, 8-4.
  • Set Five: The Flames were able to take advantage of four Viking errors, 13-7, and it was James coming up big once again, burying a pair of kills to send Cleveland State packing, 15-7.
Facts & Figures
  • Kiera James finished the day with a career-high 29 kills. It was her third-straight match recording 20 or more kills and her seventh double-digit kill performance of the season.
  • Paola Santiago matched her personal-best 18 kills, and was just one dig shy of a double-double with nine.
  • Marija Borcic tallied a career-high 62 assists and also recorded 20 digs for her 10th double-double this season.
  • Tatyana Ndekwe also matched her personal best in kills, terminating 11. The junior transfer also blocked three.
  • Ali Witt contributed nine kills and also added a pair of blocks.
  • Manuela Conte dug out 18 in the libero position, while Velina Minkova was also in the double-digits with 10.
  • The Flames racked up a team season-high 72 kills, compared to Cleveland State's 57.
