CLEVELAND, Ohio – The UIC volleyball team (15-9, 8-3 HL) saw its win streak draw to a close with a tough 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 12-15) loss to Cleveland State (15-8, 9-2 HL) Friday evening. Despite the outcome, the Flames posted team season-highs in kills (76), digs (99) and total attacks (218). The squad's 218 total attacks ranks sixth all-time in a single match.
Match Highlights
- Set One: UIC's offense got to work quickly, using six kills to build an early 8-2 advantage. Still maintaining a 15-10 lead, Cleveland State pulled within two, 15-13, after two kills and a service ace.
- Set One: Back-to-back kills from Paola Santiago put the Flames up by five, 20-15, but four straight from the Vikings put them within one, 20-19. Kills from Santiago and Kiera James put the score at 22-19, but Cleveland State was able to tie it with two kills and a block.
- Set One: The two teams battled for the two-point advantage to win, which ultimately went to the home team after two consecutive kills, 27-25.
- Set Two: The second frame began as a close battle, but the Flames strung together three straight to take a 14-10 lead.
- Set Two: The Vikings came within one, 19-18, but a service error and a James kill put the Flames ahead by three, 21-18. Cleveland State quickly took the next three to tie it, but UIC took the next three, 24-21.
- Set Two: Two points put the Vikings one away, 24-23, but a buried feed by James ended the set in favor of UIC, 25-23.
- Set Three: The Flames took six of the first seven points for a 6-1 lead. The Flames led by as many as eight, 13-5, when four straight by the Vikings made it 13-9.
- Set Three: Still up by four, 17-13, UIC took six of the next seven for a dominating 23-14 lead. A kill from Santiago put the Flames at set point, 24-16, but the Vikings had one more surge, taking five straight before James could end it with a kill, 25-21.
- Set Four: Cleveland State started set four with a 4-1 lead, leaving the Flames with work to do. The Flames were able to tie it at nine, but the Vikings took back the lead and then some, 19-12.
- Set Four: The Flames showed some late offensive energy, but were unable to close the gap as the Vikings took set four 25-18.
- Set Five: Tied at six, the Vikings put up a block and took advantage of a pair of UIC errors for a 9-6 lead, forcing the Flames to call timeout.
- Set Five: Trailing 11-7, UIC scored four in-a-row off three kills and a CSU error to tie it at 11. The Vikings took four of the next five to finish it, 15-12.
Facts & Figures
- Kiera James led all attackers with 27 kills, her second-highest total of the season. It was the fifth time this season the redshirt freshman tallied 20-plus kills.
- Manuela Conte led the defense with 31 digs. It is her second 30-plus dig showing of the season, and her 31 digs matches the 10th highest single-match dig record in UIC's record book.
- Marija Borcic had an impressive showing, tallying career highs in both assists (63) and digs (30) for her 11th double-double of the season.
- Clara Lamb contributed a career-high 15 kills on offense.
- Tatyana Ndekwe also had a career-high night on offense with 14 kills.
- Paola Santiago recorded her eighth double-double of the season, notching 10 kills and 11 digs.
- Velina Minkova was also in the double-digits in digs, tallying 10 scoops.
- The Flames out-killed the Vikings 76-59, but the Vikings were more efficient, hitting at a clip of .235 to UIC's .161.
