Flames Advance to Semis with 3-0 Sweep of Milwaukee

UIC secures first postseason victory since 2012

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The No. 4 seed UIC volleyball team (18-12) advanced to the semifinals on Friday evening with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-23) sweep of No.5 Milwaukee (8-22). The win was UIC's first in the Horizon League Tournament since 2012, and their third sweep of the Panthers this season.

Match Highlights
  • Set One: Three kills and a Panther attack error gave the Flames a 4-0 run and a 15-9 lead to start set one. Milwaukee chipped in a point, but UIC took the next three, 18-10.
  • Set One: The Panthers were able to string together three points with two kills and a UIC error, but the Flames took the next three, 21-13.
  • Set One: Milwaukee had one more four-point surge before UIC finished off the set with a pair of blocks and a 25-18 victory.
  • Set Two: Kills from Ali Witt, Kiera James and Michelle Glover went with a Marija Borcic – Witt block to give the Flames a 16-9 lead in the second.
  • Set Two: The Panthers pulled within four after a 3-0 run, 18-14, but the Flames struck back, taking the next three, 21-14.
  • Set Two: Milwaukee put down a pair of kills, 21-16, but UIC polished off the set, taking four of the last five for a 25-17 win.
  • Set Three: The Panthers contended with the Flames through the first half of the third frame until UIC pulled away with three in-a-row, 19-15.
  • Set Three: Milwaukee was able to build a comeback and tie it at 20, and after a UIC error and a termination the Panthers took over the lead, 22-21.
  • Set Three: Witt buried a feed from Borcic and joined Clara Lamb for a block to put the Flames back on top, 23-22.
  • Set Three: A Panther miscue put UIC at match point, 24-22, but the Panthers still showed life, putting away a successful attack to make it a one-point set, 24-23. Manuela Conte found the back corner unguarded to put the Flames on top, 25-23.
Facts & Figures
  • Horizon League Freshman of the Year Kiera James paced the offense with her 15th double-digit kill performance of the year.
  • Paola Santiago was also in double figures with 13 kills, her 17th double-digit kill showing. The All-League First Team and All-Freshman Team member put up a career-high .455 attack percentage, recording just three errors across 22 swings.
  • Michelle Glover recorded eight kills for the offense, while Ali Witt terminated six. Witt also contributed a career-high eight blocks for the defense.
  • Manuela Conte dug out 23 to lead the Flames in the category, while Marija Borcic led the way in assists with 40.
  • Borcic added eight digs on defense, followed by Santiago, Velina Minkova and Carla Salvato with six digs apiece
