PEORIA, Ill. – UIC concluded the 2018 cross country season on Friday by competing in the NCAA Midwest Regionals at Newman Golf Course near the campus of Bradley University. The men's team finished 24th in a field of 31 teams, while the women's squad came in 28th out of 35 teams.

Alison Hansen paced the women as she did all season, finishing near the top 100 in 118th with a time of 22:20.2. Ai Kaisho was a little over six seconds behind at 22:26.9.

Sahian Lopez finished the 6K race in 22:35.9 for a new personal best and was followed by Sylvia Waz at 23:27.9. Lexi Weltin rounded out the Flames' top five, finishing the race in 24:03.3. Teresa Meijia (24:56.0) and Abby Flammersfield (25:28.0) also competed for the Flames.

"Today was all about gaining experience," head coach Ashley Lucas said. "Our women have four freshman in the top seven and will be returning everyone but Allison."

On the men's side, Carlos Cabrera broke the top 100, coming in 88th with a time of 32:40.5 in the 10K race. Brixton Rill crossed the finish line next at 32:58.4 and was followed by Walmer Saavedra at the 33:15.6 mark. Chris Joseph finished the race in 34:19.8, while Martin Skucas ran the race in 35:39.1.

"The men lose just Brixton from today," Lucas said. "Both teams dug deep and fought to the finish. Sahian ran the best cross country race of her collegiate career and for Carlos to be in the top 100 is super impressive. We'll wrap up the season on Monday with a time trial, take a little down time and get back at it for indoor season while we continue to grow as a team and build the foundation for the future."

The Flames look ahead to the start of the indoor track and field season, which kicks off in December.
