BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UIC softball team (11-7) proved its determination on Saturday in day two of the Hoosier classic. The Flames battled against Northwestern (16-8) holding the Wildcats to a tie through six innings before taking a 5-3 loss. In a rematch against Northern Illinois (7-18), the Flames outlasted the Huskies through nine innings to come out on top with a 1-0 win.
The Flames were held to 12 hits across the two games, but the hits were spread around the roster as
Taylor Cairns,
Emily Wetzel,
Claire Crane,
Kayla Wedl and
Alyssa Griman all recorded two hits, while
Lexi Watts had one. Wetzel and Wedl were the only Flames to register multi-base hits, and Wetzel led UIC with two RBI.
Highlights vs. Northwestern
- With two outs in the bottom of the third, Watts and Cairns put together back-to-back singles. Skylee James was able to reach on an error by Northwestern's third baseman, bringing Watts around to score. Cairns and James advanced to third and second on a single from Claire Crane, but were left there after Tiana Mack-Miller lined out.
- Northwestern loaded the bases in the top of the fourth by way of a hit by pitch and two walks. Another walk and another hit by pitch gave the Wildcats a pair of runs and a 2-1 lead halfway through the fourth inning.
- The Flames took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, as Jasmine Willis came in to pinch hit for Ria Smith and Drew a walk. Cassie Kaelber was brought in to pinch run, and was out at second on the fielder's choice off the bat of Wedl. Griman singled to right field and stole second, putting the leading run in scoring position. Emily Wetzel found the left center gap, scoring Kaelber and Griman and putting the lead back in UIC's hands, 3-2.
- Northwestern's Marissa Panko tripled into left field in the top of the fifth, and crossed home plate on Morgan Nelson's single up the middle to tie it at three all.
- The Wildcats' leadoff single in the seventh stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. A single out to center brought in the tiebreaking run, and an error by the Flames put the Wildcats up for good, 5-3.
Facts & Figures vs. Northwestern
- The Flames and Wildcats were even in hits, tallying seven apiece. Crane led UIC with two, while the other five were spread between Watts, Cairns, Wedl, Griman and Wetzel.
- Wetzel paced UIC with two RBI, driving in a pair off her double in the bottom of the fourth.
- Karissa Frazier got the start, and pitched 6.1 innings giving up six hits, four earned runs and struck out three to take the loss. Marley Hanlon came on for relief in the seventh, pitching 0.2 innings, giving up one hit.
Highlights vs. Northern Illinois
- The Flames had a good look in the first inning, starting with Watts reaching on an error. James singled to right center and was able to advance to second on the throw, putting Watts on third. Tiana Mack-Miller was hit by a pitch, but the Huskies got out of the inning unharmed.
- UIC had another opportunity in the sixth, as Crane led off with a walk and stole second. Mack-Miller advanced Crane to third, but Wedl grounded out to end the inning.
- After eight scoreless innings, Wedl doubled to left field with one out to get things started for UIC. Griman singled to center, bringing in Wedl to break the drought. In their own half of the inning, the Huskies had a runner on first reach off an error, but the Flames turned a double play to get out of the inning, and the game, with a 1-0 victory.
Facts & Figures vs. Northern Illinois
- For the second-straight game, both teams were even in hits, tallying five each. UIC's five came from around the roster, with Cairns, James, Wedl, Griman and Wetzel with one hit apiece.
- Trudeau pitched the duration to improve to 5-2 this season. The pitcher struck out seven while allowing just five hits across nine innings for the clean sheet.
