Box Score DETROIT – The UIC softball team (11-11, 0-1 HL) fell 5-2 to Detroit Mercy (6-15, 1-0 HL) on Friday afternoon in the first Horizon League contest of the season. The Titans struck early, earning all five runs in the first two innings, while keeping the Flames' offense at bay to hand UIC the loss.
Game Highlights
- For the third-consecutive game, the Flames scored first, with Lexi Watts showing her speed in the leadoff spot, outrunning the throw to get an infield single to leadoff for the Flames. Watts stole second and third, and crossed home on a Titan error, with the RBI nod going to Tiana Mack-Miller.
- The Titans attacked in the bottom of the inning, using three hits alongside three stolen bases to bring three across the plate for a 3-1 lead.
- A two-out single for the home team came in to score on a triple, and the runner on third stole home, extending Detroit Mercy's lead in the bottom of the second, 5-1.
- Alyssa Griman drew a walk to leadoff the fourth, and Cassie Kaelber came in to pinch run. Kaelber stole second, and made it all the way home on a costly Titan error, 5-2.
- Jennah Speth and Jasmine Willis came in to pinch hit in the seventh and were both handed walks, but the Flames were unable to capitalize, taking the 5-2 loss.
Facts & Figures
- Watts led the Flames with a pair of hits, as both teams tallied five per squad. UIC's other three came off the bats of Mack-Miller, Kayla Wedl and Skylee James. Wedl's hit marked her tenth-straight game recording a hit, tying her career-high streak. Mack-Miller owned the sole RBI for UIC on the afternoon.
- Allie Trudeau pitched the duration, giving up five runs in six innings of work, all of which were earned. The sophomore also struck out two and walked two. Detroit Mercy's Ashley Mauser got the win, holding the Flames to two runs while striking out eight.
