Flames Tame Titans with Doubleheader Sweep

UIC takes first Horizon League series win, 2-1

DETROIT- The UIC softball team (13-11, 2-1 HL) secured its first Horizon League series win of the season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Detroit Mercy (6-17, 1-2 HL). The Flames went back-and-forth with the Titans in game one to land on top 5-4, before earning a huge come from behind win in game two, 7-3.

Kayla Wedl had an impressive day at the plate going 5-for-6 with five hits and hit for the cycle on the day, recording two singles, a double, a triple and a homerun in the two games. Wedl had five RBI and two runs across both games. Skylee James was equally impressive with five RBI off a homerun, a double, and a single. Lexi Watts also had three hits on Saturday, while Claire Crane tabbed two. Emily Wetzel, Jennah Speth, Alyssa Griman, Jasmine Willis and Taylor Cairns recorded the remaining hits.

Game One Highlights
  • Detroit Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, collecting three hits and taking advantage of a walk and a fielder's choice.
  • Watts and Cairns singled back-to-back to lead off the second, and James put a sacrifice fly into right field to bring in Watts and get the Flames on the board with one. Mack-Miller walked and Wedl put one in the right corner for a triple, scoring Cairns and Mack-Milller to put the lead into UIC's hands, 3-2.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Titans put a runner on second with a double, and a homerun over the left center wall at the hands of Kara Vitale gave Detroit Mercy the advantage again, 4-3.
  • The Flames tied it in the sixth, as Wedl tacked on a double and moved to third on a bunt from Jennah Speth. Claire Crane put a long hit into right field, scoring Wedl to even the score.
  • Watts made it to third off an error in the seventh to lead off, and was brought home by James to put UIC ahead again, 5-4. The Titans put runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but Frazier came up with a big strikeout to end the inning and give the Flames the win.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • The Flames gathered eight hits, with Watts and Wedl registering multi-hit games with two apiece.
  • Cairns, James, Crane and Emily Wetzel each collected one hit apiece. James and Wedl each had two RBI, while Crane tabbed one. Watts also had two runs, while Cairns, James Mack-Miller, and Wedl made up the other three.
  • Frazier pitched the complete game to improve to 4-4 on the season. The redshirt-junior struck out three and allowed four earned runs.
Game Two Highlights
  • The first run of the game did not come until the bottom of the fifth, as a Titan was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single, giving Detroit Mercy the 1-0 lead. The Titans added a walk and a single to load the bases, and scored two more on a heads up sacrifice fly situation to own a 3-0 advantage.
  • UIC answered the following inning, as James led off with a double. Cassie Kaelber stepped in to pinch run for James, and came around to score on a single from Griman. Wedl came up big again for the Flames, singling through the left side to bring in Griman, 3-2.  
  • Trailing by one heading into their final at bat, the Flames offense erupted in the seventh, with five runs coming off two home runs. Willis entered the game to pinch hit and singled to the short stop to get things started for the Flames. Maddie Spinks came in to pinch run, and Watts laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Spinks to second, and Cairns reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced on a throwing error, putting runners on second and third for James, who launched the ball over the left-center fence for her first home run of the season. The bomb put the Flames ahead for good, 5-3. With the bases cleared, Mack-Miller walked and Wedl came up and cleared them again with the Flames' second home run of the inning, her second of the season, effectively handing UIC the 7-3 win.
Game Two Facts & Figures
  • The Flames outhit the Titans 10-7, led by Wedl's three hits. James also had a multi-hit effort with two. Wedl's offensive production extended her hit streak into 12 games, a new career high.
  • Watts, Griman, Speth, Crane and Willis each notched a hit, with Crane tabbing a multi-base effort with a double.
  • Allie Trudeau pitched her sixth complete game of the season and struck out five while allowing three earned runs.
