Flames Defeated by Northern Illinois

UIC falls 13-2 (5) to the Huskies

DEKALB, Ill. – The UIC softball team (13-12) took a tough 13-2 (5) loss to Northern Illinois (10-20) Wednesday afternoon inside Mary M. Bell Field. The Huskies put up nine runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding at least one run in each of the innings that followed to defeat the Flames in five innings.  

Game Highlights
  • Lexi Watts led off with a single, and Taylor Cairns reached on an error to put runners on first and second for UIC in the top of the first. Watts was caught stealing at third, but Cairns remained safe at second for Griman, who singled to right center to drive in Cairns, giving the Flames the first run of the game.
  • The Huskies took advantage of five walks and a hit by pitch, while also tacking on four hits to put up nine runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Tiana Mack-Miller led off the second inning with a double down the left-field line and Marley Hanlon walked to put runners on first and second again for the Flames, and Emily Wetzel put another ball on the left-field line to score Mack-Miller, 9-2.
  • The Huskies' half of the second saw three more hits and two UIC errors, which added up to two more runs for the Huskies and an 11-2 lead.
  • Northern Illinois kept the offensive surge rolling, tacking on another run off a pair of hits to make it 12-2 after three innings of play.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies utilized three hits and a sacrifice fly to bring another run across the plate, 13-2.
  • With two outs in the fifth, Griman walked and Wedl reached on an error, but the Flames were unable to spark a rally to bring them home, awarding NIU the run-rule victory.
Facts & Figures
  • Griman went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Watts went 2-for-3 as the only Flames to register multi-hit games. Skylee James, Mack-Miller and Wetzel each tabbed one apiece.The Flames were out-hit 12-8.
  • Jennah Speth started her second game of the season and pitched 0.1 innings before Hanlon came on in relief. The loss went to Speth, giving her a 1-3 mark on the season.
