Flames Uprooted by Oakland

UIC falls 10-2 (5) to Golden Grizzlies

CHICAGO – A windy, Chicago afternoon threw the UIC softball team (14-15, 3-3 HL) for a whirl on Saturday, as they were defeated 10-2 (5) by Oakland. The loss also allowed the Golden Grizzlies to take a 2-1 series win over the Flames.

Game Highlights
  • Oakland struck hard in the top of the first, putting up seven runs on six hits to jump out to a large lead early. The Golden Grizzlies' rally included a pair of triples, as well as four singles.
  • Facing a sizable hole, Lexi Watts tried to get a spark going for the Flames in their bottom half of the first, leading off with a bunt and using speed to come around to score all the way from first off a double from Skylee James.
  • A solo shot to right field by Oakland's Natalie Herrington added another run for the Golden Grizzlies in the top of the second, 8-1, and then in the top of the fourth, Oakland tacked on another pair of runs off two hits and a UIC error, extending its lead to 10-1.
  • The Flames attempted to start a rally in the fifth, starting with Cassie Kaelber, who bunted and stole second. Maddie Spinks grounded out to advance Kaelber, and a single up the middle from Watts allowed Kaelber to cross the plate. Taylor Cairns came up to bat next and laid down another bunt, putting runners on first and second, but that is where they stayed as a fly out ended the inning, and the game, for UIC.
Facts & Figures
  • Despite the run discrepancies, the two teams were almost even in hits, with Oakland tallying nine to UIC's seven. Watts paced the Flames with a 2-for-3 performance, while also finishing the afternoon with an RBI. Cairns, James, Griman, Kaelber, and Tiana-Mack-Miller made up the Flames' other five hits.
  • Three Flames came in to pitch against Oakland on Saturday, Allie Trudeau started and pitched 0.2 innings, and was relieved by Marley Hanlon, who dealt 1.0 innings of work. Karissa Frazier finished the game for UIC and pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two hits while striking out three.
Up Next
  • The Flames will get a rematch against Loyola on Wednesday, April 4, this time on their own turf.
