Defensive Battle Ends in Favor of the Flames

UIC defeats IUPUI 1-0

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (15-15, 4-3 HL) endured a battle of the defenses on Tuesday afternoon at Flames Field, taking down IUPUI (10-21, 6-6 HL) by a final score of 1-0. UIC scored all the runs it needed in the first inning, and utilized timely defense to keep the Jags from crossing the plate for its seventh shutout victory of the season.

Game Highlights
  • Lexi Watts led off with a walk to start the Flames in the bottom of the first, stole second and advanced to third on a pass ball. Skylee James put a ball down the left-field line to bring in Watts as the only run of the entire game.
  • The Jaguars threatened in the top of the fourth, leading off with a bunt, a single and another bunt to put runners on second and third. The ball was hit inside the infield to Wedl at shortstop, who made a heads up fielder's choice to get the runner out at home to keep IUPUI from scoring.
  • The top of the fifth saw a pair of singles for the Jags, as Karissa Frazier was brought in to relieve starter Marley Hanlon. Frazier forced IUPUI into three-straight groundouts to take away the threat and get out of the inning unharmed.
