Flames Foiled by Butler, 7-3

UIC’s win streak halted at six

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (20-16) saw its win streak come to a halt on Thursday with a 7-3 loss to Big East-contender Butler (17-21). The Flames were unable to capitalize on offensive opportunities, leaving 10 batters on base through the seven innings of play.

Game Highlights
  • The Bulldogs scored first, utilizing a walk and two singles to pull out to a 1-0 lead. The visitors added another run in the next inning, as a costly error on a routine sacrifice bunt allowed the runner to score from second.
  • The Flames were able to tie it up in the bottom of the third with three-straight singles from Tiana Mack-Miller, Alyssa Griman and Kayla Wedl. Claire Crane put a single through the left side to score Mack-Miller and Griman to make it two-all.
  • Butler regained the lead in the top of the fourth, as a walk, a single and two more walks brought allowed the Bulldogs to score, 3-2.
  • The Bulldogs started the sixth inning with two singles, putting runners on first and third. The runner at first was caught attempting to steal second, but the attempt allowed the runner on third to advance on the throw, plating the insurance run for Butler.
  • In the seventh, the Bulldogs put two balls over the fence on opposite sides of the field to put up a three spot, increasing their lead to 7-2.
  • Skylee James got UIC's final at bat started with a single through the right side, but was caught at second in a fielder's choice at the bat of Mack-Miller. Griman found a hole up the middle, advancing Mack-Miller, and an error by the Butler third baseman allowed Wedl to take first and load the bases for the Flames. Crane hit into another fielder's choice, allowing the Bulldog third baseman to step on the bag to get Griman, but Mack-Miller made it safely home to record UIC's final run of the day.
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames outhit the Bulldogs, 11-10, but were unable to utilize timely offense throughout the game. Lexi Watts lead UIC with three hits, while Griman and Wedl also registered multi-hit efforts with a pair each. James, Mack-Miller, Crane and Taylor Cairns all ended the afternoon with one hit apiece.
  • Allie Trudeau made the start for the Flames and earned the loss to move to 9-7 this season. Karissa Frazier came on in the fourth and allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief, and Jennah Speth closed out the game in the seventh allowing three runs off three hits.
