Flames Complete Third-Straight #HLSB Series Sweep

UIC defeats Green Bay 5-0

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (23-17, 12-3 HL) shutout Horizon League-foe Green Bay (9-31, 6-10 HL) on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 5-0. The win secured the third-straight series sweep in conference play for the Flames, who have won their last nine Horizon League contests.

Game Highlights
  • UIC got on the board first with one run in the top of the third. Claire Crane smacked a one-out double through the left side, and a fielding error allowed her to score while also giving Lexi Watts first base.
  • The Flames added a pair in the next inning, as Alyssa Griman walked, Kayla Wedl singled and Marley Hanlon laid down a bunt to load the bases. Cassie Kaelber entered the game to pinch run for Griman, and scored alongside Wedl on an up the middle single from Taylor Cairns.
  • The top of the seventh gave UIC another two runs and some room to breathe. Watts singled to center to start and stole second. James followed suit with a nearly identical hit to center, and stole second to put runners on second and third for Mack-Millers's single down the left field line, which scored both Flames.
  • The Phoenix had a handful of scoring opportunities throughout the game, leaving two runners on base in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings, but the Flames defense held tight, never allowing a run to cross the dish.
Facts & Figures
  • UIC doubled Green Bay's hit total, finishing the game with eight hits to the Phoenix's four.
  • Watts was the sole Flame to register a multi-hit appearance, while the remaining six hits were spread between James, Mack-Miller, Wedl, Hanlon, Cairns and Crane.
  • Allie Trudeau got the start, pitched her ninth complete game of the season and dealt her fourth solo shutout of the season. The sophomore allowed just four hits and no runs in the seven innings of work.
