Seventh Inning Rally Not Enough Versus Wright State

Flames drop 10-9 decision

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (23-18, 12-4 HL) fought hard after visiting Wright State (15-28, 9-8 HL) put up six points in the first inning, eventually coming within one run of a tie game in the seventh with a two-out rally, but the Flames would wind up short, 10-9.

Game Highlights
  • Wright State put up a crooked number in the first inning, posting six runs off six hits.
  • UIC got to work in its half of the first, putting up a pair of runs. Lexi Watts lead off with a single and Skylee James followed suit to put runners on first and second, and a sacrifice bunt from Tiana Mack-Miller put both runners in scoring position. Alyssa Griman placed a double down the right field line, allowing both Watts and James to touch home, 6-2.
  • The Flames tacked on another pair of runs in the fourth, as Mack-Miller got things going with a single to right. Griman drew a walk and Kayla Wedl singled up the middle, and an error by the Wright State defense on the play allowed Mack-Miller to score while Griman took third. Taylor Cairns laid one into left field for an RBI single, putting UIC within two, 6-4.
  • A leadoff double was trouble for the Flames in the top of the fourth, and a walk, a pair of fielder's choices and a single resulted in three runs and breathing room for the visitors, 9-4.
  • A pair of UIC errors allowed another Raider to cross home plate in the next inning, growing Wright State's lead to six, 10-6.
  • Jasmine Willis, Cairns and Maddie Spinks all singled to load the bases for the Flames in the bottom of the fifth. Watts gave the second baseman a hit that was too hard to field, meanwhile Willis and Cairns both made their way across the dish, 10-8.
  • After two quick outs in their last chance at the plate, Cassie Kaelber entered the game as a pinch hitter and singled to left field. Watts put in another infield single, putting two on for James, who belted a three-run shot that just stayed fair in left field to put the Flames within one, 10-9. Mack-Miller kept UIC's hope alive with a single down the left field line, but a groundout on the next play would close the books on game one.
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames tallied a season-high 17 hits in the game, as all but one starter contributed at least one hit, with the exception of starting pitcher Marley Hanlon. • Hanlon pitched 2.1 innings and allowed six runs off nine hits. Karissa Frazier came in to pitch the remainder of the game, dealing 4.2 innings of work and giving up four runs by way of four hits.
