UIC soccer alum Pat McMahon, along with his Louisville City side, will compete in the 2018 US Open Cup quarterfinals Wednesday night in Chicago.
McMahon, a member of UIC's decorated class of 2009, is in his first season with Louisville after completing two seasons with FC Cincinnati. He has started eight games this season, including City's win over MLS side New England Revolution in the US Open Cup fourth round, and their victory over Nashville SC in the round of 16.
"Pat has quietly built himself a successful pro career," UIC head coach
Sean Phillips commented. "It's not surprising to me that Louisville City is contending for trophies with him on their line. Pat has a history of doing everything necessary to play at a championship level, winning a title in 2015 with Rochester and going back to his days here at UIC when he won three titles in four years."
While at UIC, McMahon set a school record by starting all 85 of the team's matches during his career. He was an integral part of the back line that recorded 25 shutouts his junior and senior campaigns. In those seasons, the Flames advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen respectively. He scored the game winning goal in the 2007 Horizon League Tournament championship match against Green Bay.
Since catching on in the USL in 2014, McMahon has amassed 85 starts and won the 2015 USL Cup with the Rochester Rhinos.
Louisville City is the lone remaining entry from the USL in the US Open Cup draw. Standing in their way to the semifinals is MLS member and four-time Cup champion Chicago Fire. The teams will square off at 7:30 pm at Toyota Park. With a win, City would continue its quest to become the second non-MLS team to win the US Open Cup since America's highest division was established in 1996.
