DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC volleyball team (8-7, 1-1 HL) dropped a close battle against Wright State (9-5, 1-1 HL) Saturday afternoon. Three sets were decided by just two points in the 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 21-25, 27-29) Raider victory.
Match Highlights
- Set One: UIC stared down a 6-1 hole to start, but after a 9-1 run, the Flames had a 10-7 edge.
- Set One: UIC continued to lead, 19-17, but a Wright State kill and service ace tied the set at 19, forcing the Flames to call timeout.
- Set One: Following the break, another ace coupled with a UIC error put the Raiders ahead, 21-19, but the Flames tied it at 21 after a kill from Kiera James and a Wright State error.
- Set One: The two teams battled for the lead until the Raiders were able to slip past the Flames, 26-24.
- Set Two: The Raiders once again built an early lead, 7-2. UIC was able to pull within two, 17-15, after three WSU errors and a kill from James.
- Set Two: The Flames cut the lead to one after a Paola Santiago termination and a block by Ali Witt, Clara Lamb and Santiago, 22-21.
- Set Two: Kills from Santiago and Witt tied the set at 23, and a UIC error and WSU kill tied it again at 24. Two straight kills from James ended the match with a 26-24 comeback win for the Flames.
- Set Three: Trailing 13-9, the Flames tied the set at 13 after a 5-0 run that saw kills from Santiago, Alexandria Hicks and Tatyana Ndekwe as well as a Hicks/Ndekwe block.
- Set Three: UIC had a 16-15 advantage until a 4-0 run put the lead into the hands of the Raiders, 19-16. The Flames were unable to make a comeback, dropping the set 25-21.
- Set Four: Tied at 21, another James kill and a WSU service error put the Flames up 23-21. The Raiders answered and tied the match at 24 with a block and a kill. The close match continued, as the two teams tied at 25, 26 and 27. A successful termination for Wright State and a UIC error crushed the Flames' chances, as the Raiders took the set 29-27.
Facts & Figures
- Kiera James paced the Flames offense, tallying a career-high 18 kills. The redshirt freshman also topped her personal best in digs with seven.
- Lauren Musante tabbed her second double-double of the year with a team-high 25 assists and 11 digs.
- Marija Borcic recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 digs and 22 assists.
- Paola Santiago brought in a career-high 15 digs on offense, while also tacking on 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
- Ali Witt hit .391 in the loss with 10 kills and only one error. Witt also recorded a career-high seven digs.
- Manuela Conte led the defense with 18 digs.
- Tatyana Ndekwe tallied six total blocks, allowing the Flames to out-block the Raiders 11-6.
- Alexandria Hicks blocked five, while Witt stopped four.
