UIC Falls Short in Home Match to IUPUI, 1-0

Leanna stops career high nine shots

CHICAGO – UIC suffered its first Horizon League loss at home this season when IUPUI scored with 15 minutes remaining to decide the outcome of the 1-0 final Wednesday night at Flames Field. Haley Leanna had a productive night in goal as she made a career high nine saves.

The Flames had the output on offense, racking up 11 shots and putting four of the attempts on goal. Seven players made up the total with Rebeca Pallo, Emily Valentine, Emily Kavanaugh and Alliyah Parker all putting up two shots apiece, while Pallo (2), Valentine and Tamae Douglas controlled the shots on goal.

For the third straight game, Leanna was confronted with a double-digit shot total as the Jaguars took 19 swipes at the ball to put 10 on goal. Her nines saves surpassed her previous mark of eight recorded on Sept. 9 at Eastern Michigan. The match came as her sixth complete game.

UIC drops to 2-10-0 on the year and 1-2-0 in Horizon League play while IUPUI collects its third win of the season and first in conference for a 3-6-3, 1-1-1 HL, mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Possession was split in the first half as the Jaguars outshot the Flames, 11-7. UIC was able to put three of its shots on goal with one from Valentine and two from Pallo. Leanna came up with three saves and used the assistance of the crossbar to keep the score 0-0 going into halftime.
  • UIC upped its offensive presence in the second half but was still limited in attempts as Douglas had her look stopped, Kavanaugh hooked a shot wide and Parker sent one wide in a span on 25 minutes. IUPUI had five shots during that stretch and forced Leanna to make four saves.
  • Following Leanna's eighth save of the match, the Jaguars were in possession. A throw in from Braegan Lyon landed with Miranda Ricks, who crossed the ball in and had it connect with the head of Elizabeth Bueckers to put it in the net for the eventual game-winner in the 75th minute.
  • IUPUI had one more shot the remainder of the game, with the UIC defense breaking up numerous opportunities, while the Flames saw the same result with a blocked shot from Kennedy Messina despite their attack to find the equalizer.

NOTABLES
  • A new group of starters was used for the ninth time this season. Douglas and Valentine are the only players to have started all 12 games.
  • UIC had its four match scoring streak come to an end. It was the third time this season the Flames produced at least 10 shots and did not score a goal.
  • Leanna's nine stops were the most for an individual goalkeeper since Tara Khayam made 12 last season at Drake (Sept. 17).

NEXT UP
  • UIC hits the road for its next three games beginning Saturday with a tilt in Cleveland, Ohio, against Cleveland State at 3 p.m. CT at Krenzler Field.
