CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (9-8, 2-2 HL) came up short against Green Bay (8-8, 3-1 HL) Sunday afternoon inside the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames and Phoenix traded off on sets until Green Bay landed on top with a 3-2 (13-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 14-16) win over UIC.
Match Highlights
- Set One: The Flames were unable to contend with the Phoenix in set one, as they were out-killed 19-9 to drop the set, 25-13.
- Set Two: UIC regrouped to start set two, taking an early 12-6 advantage, but the Phoenix got to work, and after a 4-0 streak they trailed by just two, 12-10.
- Set Two: The Flames responded with a 4-0 streak of their own to widen the gap, 22-15, but the Phoenix came back with three more, 22-18.
- Set Two: A 5-0 run for the Phoenix would tie the match at 24, but the Flames were able to close it out with a win after a Kiera James kill and a bad set from Green Bay, 26-24.
- Set Three: Set three started with a 15-12 advantage for the Flames, but the Phoenix took eight of the next nine to take over the lead, 20-16.
- Set Three: A Green Bay service error and kills from Alexandria Hicks and Ali Witt put the Flames back within one, 20-19.
- Set Three: Kills from Clara Lamb and Paola Santiago tied the match at 22, but Green Bay grabbed three of the next four by way of two kills and a UIC error to end the set with a 25-23 win.
- Set Four: After a pair of three-point runs, the Flames had a 21-15 lead in set four.
- Set Four: UIC coupled two Green Bay errors with a kill from Hicks to end set four with a 25=17 victory.
- Set Five: The Flames offense was unable to maintain composure at the start of set five, and five early errors gave the Phoenix a 9-3 lead, but the Flames wouldn't go down easy, fighting back to tie it at 14. Green Bay was able to finish it with a pair of blocks, 16-14.
Facts & Figures
- Manuela Conte paced the Flames defense with 22 digs, her highest of the season, while also tallying 12 kills for her fourth double-double of the season.
- Paola Santiago led the offense with 14 kills, and was just two digs shy of a double-double with eight.
- Clara Lamb ended the afternoon with 11 kills, tying her career high mark for the fourth time this season.
- Marija Borcic handed out a team-high 30 helpers and also dug out 17 for her seventh double-double of the season
- Lauren Musante tallied 23 assists and 13 digs for her third double-double on the year.
- Ali Witt killed nine on offense and led the defense with three blocks.
- Velina Minkova (16) and Carla Salvato (10) also contributed double-digit dig efforts on defense.
