GREEN BAY, Wis. -- UIC will look to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, when it tangles with the Green Bay Phoenix inside the Resch Center at 12 p.m. CT.
Both teams are looking to pick up wins after opening the weekend on the short end Thursday night. The Flames (9-10, 3-3 Horizon League) lost at Milwaukee, 81-69, as the Panthers shot 49.1 percent from the field. The result snapped a four-game winning streak in regular season play against Milwaukee.
Green Bay (9-10, 3-3 Horizon League) took on IUPUI at the Resch Center Thursday, falling 76-70. It was the third consecutive loss for the Phoenix, which forced 24 turnovers by the Jaguars, but only converted 23 points off those miscues.
Saturday's contest will feature two of the conference's top all-around talents, UIC's
Tarkus Ferguson and Green Bay's
Sandy Cohen III are the only two players in the Horizon League to rank in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and minutes. Ferguson leads the League with 5.3 assists per game and Cohen is second among all players with 1.2 steals per game.
Ferguson, who averages 15.9 points per game, enters Saturday's matchup with a milestone in reach. The Belleville, Ill., native owns 989 points and needs 11 to reach 1,000 for his career. He would join
Marcus Ottey as active Flames to join the 1,000-point club this season. Ottey accomplished the feat against Incarnate Word on Dec. 17. Ferguson also needs just seven assists to pass
Spencer Stewart (2006-10) and move into fourth place on the program's all-time list.
In this series, UIC has held the upper hand over the last meetings. The Flames took down the Phoenix in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Horizon League Championship before winning both games in the regular season last year. The first win snapped a 10-game skid against Green Bay and the most recent victory, an 83-75 win at the Kress Center on Feb. 16, 2018, was the first road win for the Flames in the series since Feb. 18, 2004.
