ALLENDALE, Mich. -- UIC returned to competition for the first time in 2019 as it traveled to Grand Valley State University for the Mike Lints Alumni Open. The male Flames accumulated 89.4 points in the 17 scored events, good for second among the 15 schools represented. On the women's side, UIC tallied 40.5 points to place fifth.
The meet featured multiple Flames earning spots on the medal stand. In the 1K, freshman Lexi Weltin turned in the fastest time in the field at 3:12.25 to earn 10 team points.Graduate student Peyton Wade made it 2-for-2 in high jump competitions this indoor season, claiming the top spot by clearing 1.68 meters. Wade also won the event at the GVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 7. Janeka Stokes was nearby Wade in fourth place Saturday.
Other highlights for the women's team included three top-nine finishes in the long jump. Alimot Lawal was fourth at 5.20 meters, while Kaylin Dean also earned a point for UIC with an eight-place finish at 4.88 meters. Prevail Bonga finished just behind Dean in ninth place at 4.75. Dean earned four more points for the Flames by placing fifth in the triple jump. Genora Garcia turned in an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 12.03 meters.
Redshirt senior
Shaun Wollenweber turned in multiple noteworthy performances for UIC's men's squad Saturday. The veteran won the triple jump with a mark of 14.71 meters, placed second in the long jump at 6.87 meters, and ran fifth in the 60-meter dash in 7.11 seconds.
Larnell Brown and
Tobi Alabi finished third and fourth, respectively in the triple jump at GVSU.
Josh Williams posted a second-place finish in the high jump at 2.00 meters. Like Wade, he won the event at GVSU on Dec. 7.
The Flames had two top-seven runners in the 400-meter dash in
Michael Meskill and
Jakob Mogorovic. Meskill claimed third place in 50.30 seconds and Mogorovic clocked the seventh-best time in 50.93 seconds to earn a combined eight points in the event for UIC. At a longer distance, 1K, UIC swept the top four spots with
Alex Bashqawi the overall victor in 2:31.09.
