Flames Brought Down by Jaguars

Kienya Jones and Abreanna Lake score in double figures, but Flames fall 71-43

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC women's basketball team (3-15, 1-6 HL) was brought down by Horizon League foe IUPUI (11-7, 5-2 HL) Saturday afternoon. The Jags cashed in 29 points off 20 UIC turnovers and turned in nine shots from downtown in their 71-43 win over the Flames.  

First Half Highlights
  • The Jags started things off with a three in their second possession, and the home team took the next five as well for an 8-0 lead. Brittany Byrd drove in a layup near the first quarter's halfway point to get UIC on the board, 8-2.
  • More layups from Byrd and Jasmine Gaines cut at the Jags' lead, 12-7, but IUPUI got the four points back quickly, 16-7. Back-to-back threes for IUPUI ended the first quarter with a 24-10 advantage for the Jags.
  • IUPUI took 11 unanswered points through the first four and-a-half minutes of the second quarter. A quick bucket from Kiarra Thompson ended the streak, but the Jags responded with their third three of the quarter, 38-12.
  • Abreanna Lake and Thompson sank threes in the final minute of the half for the Flames, but UIC trailed 44-22 at halftime.
  • The Flames turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, resulting in 16 points for the Jags. IUPUI had eight miscues in the first 20 minutes, but the Flames were only able to turn it into seven points.
Second Half Highlights
  • The second half started with a 12-0 run for the hosts, until Kienya Jones broke the spell with a steal returned for two, 56-25.
  • Lake and Jones made up UIC's next eight points, but the Jags still held a 64-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Flames outscored IUPUI 10-7 in the fourth quarter, but the Jags' sizable lead remained relatively untouched as they ended it in their favor, 71-43.
Facts & Figures
  • Kienya Jones led the offense off 54.5 percent shooting (6-of-11) with 13 points, her second double-digit scoring effort of the season. Jones also brought down six rebounds and made two steals for the Flames.
  • Abreanna Lake ended the day with a career-high 10 points. Lake also handed out a team-high three assists and made two steals.
  • Kiarra Thompson brought in nine points for the offense.
  • Brittany Byrd tallied eight points and six rebounds.
  • Jada Nneji blocked seven IUPUI shots, marking her fourth-straight appearance with five or more stops. Nneji also rebounded six and stole three.
  • The home team ended the day making 42.6 percent (26-of-68) of their shots, compared to 38 percent (19-of-50) by the Flames. IUPUI shot 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from downtown, while the Flames shot 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from three-point range.
  • The two teams were relatively even on points in the paint, with IUPUI having a slight advantage, 34-32.
  • The Jags tallied 20 second chance points to UIC's five.
  • IUPUI turned in 14 points on the fast break, compared to 10 for the Flames.
  • The two benches were also relatively even, with IUPUI's reserves turning in 28 points to the Flames' 23.

  • The road trip continues next weekend as the Flames head to Wisconsin to face Green Bay (Jan. 24) and Milwaukee (Jan. 26).
