Flames Motor to Detroit for Clash With the Titans

UIC Seeks to End Two-Match Losing Streak

UIC's road warriors will be at it again Saturday when they venture to Detroit for a Horizon League showdown with Detroit Mercy.

It is the first of three straight road matches, and part of a five-out-of-six span away from Flames Field.  The Flames are 1-1 on the road in conference play.  They sit at 2-2 overall in the Horizon League and are in a tie for fifth place.  Four of the team's five remaining games are against teams currently below them in the standings, starting with the 0-3-1 Titans.

UIC has won two straight against Detroit Mercy.  Both wins have come by shutout.  The last time the teams met in the Motor City, the Flames left with a 3-0 result.

Coverage of the match, scheduled for a 2 pm start, will be on ESPN3.

Last Time Out
  • The Flames allowed a season high three goals in a 3-0 loss to Milwaukee Sunday.
  • UIC had the lion's share of possession and had more shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks than their guests.
  • Sydney Gratz and Emma Main each had four shots and two on goal.
  • Lena Kurz and Annika Laihanen shared goalkeeping duties, marking the first match of the season in which the keeper was subbed.
Flames to Watch
  • Jackie Santibanez, Emma Main, Keri Birkenhead, and Emily Kavanaugh all have multiple goals this season.  Main has three, and the others have two each.
  • Lena Kurz has posted six shutouts in her 10 matches.  She leads the Horizon League in shutouts and is second in goals-against average.
  • Tamae Douglas scored the game-winning goal, and Kavanaugh added one of her own, in UIC's 2-0 win over Detroit Mercy last season at Flames Field.  Douglas has scored against the Titans in each of the last two seasons.
Scouting the Titans
  • Detroit Mercy lost a tight 2-1 match against Oakland Wednesday.  Hailey Wentzloff scored in the fifth minute.
  • Wentzloff and Julie Ann Piechocki each have two goals and two assists to lead the team with six points.
  • Three goalkeepers have shared duties this season.  Cece Muskovac has played seven games and has a goals-against average of 2.24 with a save percentage of .705.
  • The Titans have not won since September 13, with only a draw with Green Bay adding to their account among five losses.
Doing it With Defense
  • UIC has the second stingiest defense in the Horizon League.  The Flames have allowed nine goals entering the weekend's action, one more than first place Milwaukee's eight.
  • Though not all teams have played an equal number of matches, UIC is also second by allowing 0.75 goals per game (Milwaukee has 0.67).
  • The Flames' overall save percentage, .800, is fourth in the conference.
  • With seven shutouts, UIC ranks first in the conference.
  • Every result UIC has earned this year has come via shutout.
  • Detroit Mercy is last in the league with just seven goals on the season.
