Flames Hold off Northern Kentucky for 3-2 Win

Four Flames record double-digit kill efforts in second-straight match

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (15-6, 4-3 HL) captured its third-straight win on Friday night, outlasting Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky (10-9, 3-4 HL) in five sets (16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 27-29, 15-9). For the second-straight match, four Flames finished with double-digit kill efforts, as Kiera James (18), Alexandria Hicks (16), Michelle Glover (13) and Brookah Palmer (12) all recorded more than 10 kills.

Match Highlights
Set One
  • Northern Kentucky broke open the set with a 16-12 lead after a 4-1 series.
  • The Flames were able to fight back within two, 17-15, after kills from Alexandria Hicks and Brookah Palmer, but that would be as close as they would get, as the Norse took the next six to put the match out of reach, 23-15.
  • Northern Kentucky went on to win the set, 25-16.
Set Two
  • The Flames retaliated with an 18-12 lead in set two, but the Norse took five of the next six to pull within two, 19-17.
  • Still ahead by two, 21-19, UIC created some distance with two kills and a NKU error, 24-19.
  • The Norse were able to put down one more kill before a big swing from Hicks ended the set, 25-20.
Set Three
  • Set three was a close battle, after an early 5-0 lead for Northern Kentucky was erased by the Flames, 9-9.
  • UIC led by a pair when four-straight Norse points turned the tables and gave them the two-point advantage, 19-17.
  • The Flames held another two-point lead late, 23-21, when a termination from the Norse offense cut the lead in half, 23-22, but a NKU service error and a block from Tatyana Ndekwe and Hicks would give UIC the set, 25-22.
Set Four
  • UIC got itself to match point, 24-21, but a Norse service ace and a pair of errors erased the Flames' lead.
  • The two teams battled for the final two points, until another Flames error and a NKU block gave the set to the visitors, 29-27.
