Flames Face Tough Competition at K-State

K-State sinks 11 threes to defeat the Flames, 84-40

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The UIC women's basketball team (0-3) wrapped up its season-opening road trip on Monday evening, falling 84-40 to 2019 NCAA Tournament participant Kansas State (2-0). The Wildcats shot 45.2 percent on the night, sank 11 threes, and put up 11 blocks to defeat the Flames.   

First Half Highlights
  • Kansas State made a theft and ran it back for two to score first, but Kiarra Thompson sank a three on UIC's next possession, 3-2. The Wildcats put away a three of their own, and Tylah Lampley answered for the Flames with a layup to tie the game at five.
  • Two Flames turnovers resulted in back-to-back buckets for Kansas State, which turned into an 15-0 run for the Wildcats, 20-5.
  • Kimeira Burks got the Flames back on the board after seven minutes without a bucket, and she would finish the first quarter with three more points off a free throw and a layup, 20-10.
  • Thompson, Jealissa Presswood and Tiana Jackson all drove in buckets for the Flames in the opening half of the second, while K-State put up a trio of threes, 29-16.
  • Burks was able to make one from downtown for UIC, but the Wildcats continued their onslaught of triples, making another pair of threes, 35-19.
  • K-State took a 37-21 lead to the locker room at the half, finishing with seven threes in the first 20 minutes.
Second Half Highlights
  • Lampley swiped at a K-State pass and was able to return it for two to open up the second half, 37-23.
  • The next 17 went to the Wildcats unanswered, 54-23, as they kept UIC without a bucket over the next 6:12. Abreanna Lake put up a short-range jumper to end the drought, and both Thompson and Shelby Case followed with threes, 56-31.
  • K-State wrapped up the third period on a 9-3 run
  • A pair of free throws from Amira Coles would be all the Flames would get through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, extending Kansas State's lead, 79-36.
  • A layup from Presswood and a pair of freebies from Ahsha Spencer would wrap up the scoring for the Flames, as K-State finished with the 84-40 win.
Facts & Figures
  • Kiarra Thompson paced the Flames with 10 points, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 overall and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
  • Kimeira Burks contributed eight points, while Amira Coles finished with five. Coles was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
  • Tylah Lampley led the squad with five rebounds. Shelby Case and Ahsha Spencer rebounded four apiece.
  • K-State's defense kept the Flames to just 24.6 percent from the field and 23.5 percent beyond the arc.
  • The Flames were stronger from the charity stripe, making 66.7 percent of their shots compared to 51.5 percent for K-State.
  • UIC committed twice as many fouls, 28-14, but made fewer turnovers, 18-16.
  • Kansas State turned UIC's 16 turnovers into 24 points, while the Flames got just 13 from K-State's 18 miscues.
  • The Wildcats were stronger in the paint, 30-20, as well as on the second chance, 11-2. K-State scored 17 off the fast break, compared to nine for UIC.
  • K-State's bench put up 19 points, while UIC's put up 13.
