Lampley Shines as Flames Defeat Chicago State

Flames capture first win of the season behind Lampley’s career night

CHICAGO – An incredible night for Tylah Lampley paired up with UIC's best offensive showing of the season on Wednesday night as the Flames (1-7) captured their first win of the season with a 73-61 victory over city rival Chicago State (0-9). Lampley stole the show, netting the first double-double of her career with career highs in points (31), rebounds (11) and steals (5).

The Flames finished with their most efficient outing, shooting a season-high 37.7 percent from the field, while also finishing with their best showing at the charity stripe, making 75.9 percent of their shots. UIC's 73 points was its most since last year's season opener, when it defeated Valparaiso 75-65.

First Half Highlights
  • Jada Nneji got things off to a quick start for the Flames, taking a pass from Shelby Case and running it in for two in the game's first five seconds. The Cougars would put one in for three for their first score, but Nneji turned around and converted a three-point play, 7-3.
  • Chicago State scored four unanswered to tie the game at seven, but the Flames cashed in another three off a Kimeira Burks layup and a Tylah Lampley free throw.
  • The Cougars took over the lead with a jumper and another three. Another freebie from Lampley would leave the Flames one away at the end of the first quarter, 12-11.
  • Kiarra Thompson was fouled beyond the arc and put in two of her three free shots, putting UIC ahead, 13-12. The Flames offense erupted with a 12-2 run to extend the lead, 25-14.
  • A pair of 4-0 runs pushed UIC's lead to 15, 33-18, but the Cougars were back within nine at the end of the half after a 6-0 streak.
Second Half Highlights
  • Chicago State opened the second half with a triple, which was answered with a three from Lampley, 36-27. Lampley later laid one up to put UIC's advantage back in double figures, 38-28.
  • Jealissa Presswood sank a triple and a jumper in between four points for the Cougars, 43-35. The junior transfer picked up an assist on UIC's next score, feeding a perfect bounce pass up to Lampley under the basket, 45-35. Chicago State finished out the third quarter with a trio of free throws to pull within seven, 45-38.
  • The Cougars came within five, 45-40, but the Flames quickly rattled off six points thanks to a trey from Shelby Case and a three-point conversion from Lampley, 51-40. Chicago State put away another three, but so did the Flames, this one coming off the hands of Burks to keep the lead at 11, 54-43.
  • Lampley continued her offensive push, scoring the next six points for the Flames to pass her own career-high mark and give UIC a 60-49 advantage.
  • Abreanna Lake beat out the shot clock buzzer with a shot from downtown, 64-51. The Cougars would only get as close as eight before a series of 10 free throws ended the game with a 73-61 win for the Flames.
