Flames Primed for #HLTF Championships

Indoor Squad Headed to Youngstown for Conference Meet

2/22/2019 3:46:00 PM

The indoor track and field team will see their season come to a culmination this weekend at the Horizon League Indoor Championships.  Contested over two days in Youngstown, Ohio, the meet will give the Flames one last chance to build on their steady improvement this indoor season.

Peyton Wade already broke the school high jump record at last week's Bradley Invitational.  Also last weekend, Alex Bashqawi and Allison Hansen had top performances at the Wilson Invitational, showing that they are ready to make a difference at conference.

Head coach Ashley Lucas named Wade, Bashqawi, and Hansen, among others, as athletes that she believes can help the Flames in the team standings.  Hear more of Lucas' thoughts on the eve of the Horizon League meet below:

UIC's men have the second-fastest times in the conference this season in the 4x400 and distance medley relays.  Wade and Josh Williams give the Flames the top high jumps on the women's and men's slates.  Shaun Wollenweber leads a trio of Flames in the top five in the triple jump.

The meet will open at 8:00 am Saturday with the pentathlon and heptathlon, and will continue at noon with field finals.  The afternoon session will consist of mostly track prelims, but will include the finals of the 5K and distance medley relay.  On Sunday, the heptathlon will conclude first before more field finals are contested.  Finals of the remaining track races will start at noon Central.  Links to watch both days' finals, and the complete schedule of events, are in the blue box above.

Youngstown State is the defending champion in the men's and women's competitions.  The Penguins have won three straight men's indoor titles, and four of the last five women's championships.  UIC finished fifth on the women's side and eighth on the men's side at last year's event.
