CHICAGO – UIC trailed by three points with just under 12 minutes to go, but the Flames unleashed an 18-0 run and held Milwaukee without a point for a span of nearly eight minutes to put the Panthers away before winning, 74-59.
The Flames (15-14, 9-7 Horizon League), who lead the Horizon League in field-goal percentage defense, held the Panthers (9-20, 4-12 Horizon League) to a mark of 34.4 percent on Sunday. UIC shared the ball well with 17 assists on 27 field goals.

Godwin Boahen led a very balanced attack with 22 points, a season-high eight rebounds and six assists, while
Marcus Ottey added 14 points and eight rebounds.
Tarkus Ferguson notched 12 points, eight assists and five boards.

The victory helped UIC move into a three-way tie for third place with Green Bay and Oakland.
First-Half Headlines
- HOWARD's HOT START: Rob Howard won the opening tip for the Flames and finished he first possession with a two-handed slam off a feed from Tarkus Ferguson. The Gary, Ind., native went on to score the next four points for UIC, as well, prompting the Panthers to take a timeout out 2:11 into the game.
- PUSH THE CUSHION: The Flames used a 14-4 run in just over five minutes to push the lead to double digits for the first time with 10:16 to go in the half. Jamie Ahale's 3-pointer off a feed from Boahen gave the home team a 20-10 lead.
- SWEET SEVENTEEN: UIC continued to put pressure on the Panthers over the next five minutes and Flames eventually grew the lead to 17 points with three straight points from the charity stripe and a fast break layup from Ottey. That basket gave UIC a 35-17 lead with 5:16 left in the period.
- FINE AT NINE: Milwaukee made a late surge in the first half, managing to cut its deficit to nine points at the half with the Flames in front, 40-31.
Second-Half Headlines
- MILWAUKEE MAKES A MOVE: The Panthers burst out of the locker room and grabbed their first lead of the game with 11:56 remaining when Jake Wright made one of his two 3-pointers on the night. The shot capped a 21-9 run and put Milwaukee in front, 52-49.
- BACK IN FRONT: On the next possession after losing the lead, UIC quickly knotted it up. Tarkus Ferguson tallied a long 3-pointer off a pass from Ottey. Following a Wright miss that was rebounded by Ferguson, Michael Diggins stepped into a triple from the right corner that gave the Flames a 55-52 lead.
- DEFENSIVE CLINIC: Beginning with the Ferguson 3-pointer, UIC exploded to score 18 unanswered points, while holding Milwaukee off the scoreboard entirely for the next 8:07. The Panthers had six turnovers in that stretch, including a shot-clock violation, and by the time it was over, the Flames led reached 15 points once again at 67-52. The lead never dipped below 10 points the rest of the afternoon.
Notable
- Godwin Boahen became the 26th player in program history, and the third this season, to reach 1,000 career points. He needed eight points to hit the milestone Sunday and would get that with a driving layup with 3:20 to go in the half. He would go on to score 14 more points to lead all players.
- Boahen leads UIC with seven performances of at least 20 points this season. He also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds and added six assists without a turnover Sunday.
- The Flames improved to 14-4 with a halftime lead this season and 9-2 against Horizon League teams.
- UIC shot at least 40 percent from beyond the arc for the 10th time this season. The Flames converted 42.9 percent of their triples Sunday (9-of-21). UIC is 13-5 when it shoots at least 35 percent from beyond the arc.
- UIC held an opponent 35 percent from the floor for the fourth time this season and all four instances have come against Horizon League foes (at Wright State, vs. Youngstown State, vs. Wright State, vs. Milwaukee).
- The Flames own a field-goal percentage defense of 39.7 percent in conference play, tops in the Horizon League. No other team is holding opponents below 43 percent. UIC is second in scoring defense at 70.2 points per game.
